Job summary

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources in Windom, MN is seeking a permanent full-time Scientific and Natural Areas Management Specialist to protect and enhance native communities on SNAs in the Southern Region.

You will serve as local point-of-contact, plan habitat projects, supervise prescribed burns, assist with land protection, and engage the public to promote stewardship of rare resources and natural lands.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in ecology, wildlife management, zoology, conservation biology, natural resource management, or related field.
  • Three years of professional habitat assessment/management experience (advanced degree may substitute).
  • Knowledge of prairie and forest ecology in southern Minnesota; experience with chainsaws and prescribed fire.
  • Ability to identify common grasses and flowers; interpret air photos.
  • Knowledge of land protection methods and conservation strategies.
  • Computers: word processing, databases, spreadsheets, and PowerPoint; GIS (ArcGIS Pro).
  • Strong written and verbal communication; ability to lead and organize.
  • Ability to work with diverse people in a variety of settings.

Responsibilities

  • Function as the local point-of-contact for SNAs in the Southern Region; identify management needs and plan habitat projects.
  • Direct and supervise prescribed burns on lands; assist with safety and plans.
  • Seek protection and assist in acquisition of priority lands for SNAs and related programs.
  • Coordinate and perform public engagement, outreach, education on SNAs.
  • Lead day-to-day field crew operations; assist with budgeting and administrative duties.
