Job summary

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources in Windom, Minnesota, seeks a Scientific and Natural Areas Management Specialist to protect and enhance native plant and animal communities on SNAs in the Southern Region.

Responsibilities include directing field crews, planning habitat enhancement projects, and coordinating public engagement, with a emphasis on prairie and forest ecology and safe execution of prescribed burns and equipment operations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in ecology, wildlife management, zoology, conservation biology, natural resource management, or closely related major.
• 3 years of professional habitat management experience; advanced degree may substitute for 1 year.
• Knowledge of prairie and forest ecology; ability to identify native/invasive species; GIS experience.
• Ability to work physically in diverse weather and terrain; operate field equipment safely.

Responsibilities

• Serve as local point-of-contact for SNAs in the Southern Region and plan habitat enhancement projects.
• Direct and supervise prescribed burns and assist with safe integration into management plans.
• Identify and assist in acquisition of priority lands for SNA designation and related programs.
• Coordinate public engagement and information activities to support conservation efforts.
• Lead day-to-day field crew operations and assist with budget and administrative duties.
