Job summary

Metals USA is seeking a Slitter Operator for our Union, NJ location. The role requires basic English, arithmetic, measurement skills, and experience with overhead crane and forklift operations. A strong emphasis is placed on safety, ISO quality, and teamwork.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or technical school graduate.
• Basic English reading and writing.
• Basic arithmetic and measurement skills.
• Experience operating overhead crane and forklift.
• Basic computer knowledge.
• Knowledge of safety rules and OSHA standards.
• Ability to follow company policies and exercise judgment.
• Ability to read customer packaging requirements and assess product quality.
• Team player.

Responsibilities

• Set up burning machine; adjust gas flow and feed rates; measure with gauges and calipers.
• Align material in machine bed using gauges, templates, shims, or hand tools.
• Select materials per work order; inspect thickness, length, width, and color code.
• Coordinate material handling and operate overhead crane.
• Review CAD drawings and work orders; follow tooling instructions.
• Perform quality inspections for ISO certification.
• Stack and palletize finished products for shipment.
• Operate forklift and overhead crane as required.

Job description

• High School/Technical School Graduate with basic English reading & writing comprehension
• Basic arithmetic skills to calculate & convert decimals and fractions
• Basic measuring skills to read English & Metric systems and a tape measure, caliper or micrometer.
• Experience of operating an overhead crane, forklift, hand tools and common shop machinery
• Basic computer knowledge
• Ability to understand and use Safety Rules and Procedures as well as OSHA standards and regulations
• Must exercise a reasonable degree of judgment and possess the ability to recognize appropriate company policies that apply in each situation and follow them
• Must be able to understand customers packaging requirements and assess product quality
• Work as a Team member

Certifications/Licenses:

• Valid OSHA Forklift & Overhead Crane Certificates preferred

Base Wage: $19 - $24/hour

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Responsibilities:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

• Sets up burning machine, selects proper burning tip, sets gas flow and machine feed rates, location of cutting, lines dimensions, tolerances, operational sequences and uses gauges, calipers, squares, rulers for measurement.
• Sets up and aligns specified material or other fixtures in machine bed using gauges, templates, shims, or hand tools.
• Chooses correct material for the job according to work order. Inspects plates for thickness, length, width, heat number, grade specification and color code.
• Coordinates and executes material handling to be processed including operation of overhead crane.
• Reviews CAD drawings, work orders, tooling instructions or other written specifications.
• Performs quality control inspections on finished product; for ISO-certification.
• Stacks, bands, and palletizes finished products for shipment.
• Performs the duties of a warehouse worker to include operating a forklift & overhead crane.
