Position Summary:

Join us as our Sleepaway Camp - Health Assistant & Medication Administrator for an enriching opportunity to positively impact young campers’ lives. This role involves reviewing camper medical histories and forms, communicating with parents regarding questions/concerns, assisting with camper check-in, maintaining a continuous presence at the health center, and being available to respond to emergencies alongside other camp health staff. This position entails upholding health and safety standards for all campers and personnel, as well as overseeing the daily administration of medications.

Time Commitment:

This is a seasonal role that requires living on-site for the duration of the appointment.

June 4-6 - In-office pre-camp training; commute daily to council office in Baltimore, MD

June 8-20 - At-camp pre-camp training; live at camp during this period in Conowingo, MD

June 22-August 8 - Camper Sessions

August 10-12 - All Staff Clean-up

Health staff will maintain the health center and be on call throughout the day and night, serving staff and campers from Sunday midday check-in through Friday evening check-out and clean-up. The Health Assistant & Medication Administrator rotates on-duty times with other health staff and is expected to attend all staff meetings and pre-camp trainings.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Complete duties as instructed by the camp Health Supervisor and Camp Director.
  • Administer medical care and first aid to campers and staff within certification scope and recommend transfer of care to emergency services as needed.
  • Review camper medical histories and forms prior to and after weekly check-in.
  • Adhere to all health and safety guidelines and standards.
  • Communicate with parents regarding medical questions/concerns/updates.
  • Assist with camper check-in, securing all medications, and ensuring all medical paperwork is submitted.
  • Oversee communicable disease screening and temperature checks at check-in.
  • Instruct staff in the proper use of first-aid kits and packs.
  • Supervise health, safety, and sanitation practices of the camp.
  • Keep records of all health-related incidents at camp.
  • Maintain stock of health center equipment and supplies.
  • Maintain a continuous presence at the health center for emergencies.
  • Uphold general health and safety standards for all campers and personnel.
  • Oversee the daily administration of medications to campers and staff.
  • Keep medication secure and dispense as prescribed.
  • Advise staff on emergency medications and day-to-day medical concerns.
  • Respond immediately to medical emergencies.
  • Assist in washing and maintaining soiled linens and clothing.
  • Lead pre-camp and in-service training sessions.
  • Manage administrative tasks, including record-keeping and reporting.
  • Exemplify a positive attitude and strong work ethic.
  • Adapt swiftly to changing situations.
  • Champion the values of the Girl Scouts program.
  • Participate in weekly all-camp activities while ensuring safety.
  • Prioritize exceptional customer service for campers and staff.

Skills, Education and/or Relevant Experience:

  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Must be a Physician (MD), CRNP, RN, LPN, or Certified Medication Technician (CMT)/Certified Medicine Aide (CMA).
  • Must be a Maryland licensed professional with medication administration capability.
  • Knowledge of relevant regulations and guidelines is required.
  • Must possess current First Aid and CPR certification or complete training prior to camper arrival.
  • Ability to recognize and manage health and safety hazards.
  • Ability to nurture the needs of campers and staff.
  • Strong record-keeping skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strength and endurance for a 6-day workweek.
  • Ability to respond to environmental hazards.
  • Valid driver’s license and clear driving record.
  • Must pass background checks and drug screening.
