Job summary

Carilion Rockbridge Community Hospital is seeking a Sleep Lab Tech II to perform polysomnography studies, titrations, and related diagnostics under medical supervision. The role includes equipment calibration, data collection, and patient education across pediatric to geriatric populations.

Job description

SLEEP LAB TECH II (Open)

A RT Sleep Technician works under the general supervision of the medical director (MD, DO, PhD) or designee to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders, including in‑center and out‑of‑center sleep testing, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, comprehensive patient care, and direct patient education.

Responsibilities
  • Collect, analyze, and integrate patient information and medical/social history to determine testing parameters in conjunction with physician or laboratory protocols.
  • Verify patient identity, obtain consent, and explain the procedure for in‑center or home studies.
  • Select and calibrate equipment; apply electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards.
  • Perform PAP interface fitting, physiological calibrations, and make required adjustments.
  • Conduct polysomnography, MSLT, MWT, parasomnia, PAP, and oxygen titration studies.
  • Execute “lights‑out” procedures to establish baseline values and monitor study‑tracing quality.
  • Acquire data, monitor tracing quality, identify and correct artifacts, and document observations and significant events.
  • Implement therapeutic interventions (e.g., PAP, oxygen) for patient safety and therapeutic benefit.
  • Conduct “lights‑on” procedures to verify data integrity and complete collection.
  • Score sleep/wake stages and clinical events per AASM and center protocols.
  • Generate accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data.
  • Prepare, download, and disinfect portable monitoring equipment; instruct patients on out‑of‑center sleep testing.
  • Maintain equipment inventory, perform routine care, and evaluate equipment readiness.
  • Respond to study participant inquiries and adhere to safety, infection control, and quality assurance policies.
  • Review and evaluate sleep studies; provide constructive feedback to staff.
  • Assist facility director and/or manager in sleep facility operations and equipment inventory.
  • Provide age‑specific care for pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Supervise unlicensed polysomnographic personnel, ensuring tasks are within scope of competent practice and that professional judgment is retained.
Qualifications
  • Education:
    • Successful completion of an accredited sleep technology program or an associate’s degree with emphasis in sleep technology; or equivalent experience and documented proficiency in sleep technician competencies.
  • Certification:
    • Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) required; consideration for Registered Sleep Technologist (RST) or Sleep Disorders Specialist (SDS) credentials acceptable.
  • Experience: One year in an AASM‑accredited sleep center preferred or current respiratory therapy (RT) certification with plans to pursue sleep technology credentials.
  • Licensure & Requirements:
    • Virginia State License for Polysomnographic Technologist & RPSGT by the Board of Polysomnographic Technologists; or RT certification by the Virginia Board of Medicine.
    • Enroll in an accredited sleep technology program (e.g., ASTEP) within 30 days of hire and complete it within 6-8 months.
    • Obtain RPSGT certification within 18 months and a Virginia Board of Medicine license within 18 months.
  • Life Support: Maintain AHA BLS‑HCP certification.
  • Other Minimum Qualifications:
    • Proficient computer skills.
    • Effective written and verbal communication.
    • Customer service and teamwork skills.
    • Critical thinking, ability to follow directions, and work with minimal supervision.
    • Compliance with HIPAA policies and privacy standards.
