Job summary

Maryland Department of Juvenile Services is seeking a Skilled Trade Specialist IV to ensure the continuous operation of the Charles H. Hickey Jr. Center.

This role covers HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry and maintenance duties to keep the facility safe for youths and staff. The position involves installations, renovations, painting and repairs, with responsibilities that include after-hours emergency responses and grounds maintenance.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• Minimum of five years of skilled-trade experience in plumbing, carpentry, electrical, HVAC, locksmith, masonry, painting, or welding.
• Substitution of additional years of experience for education is allowed; military experience may count.
• Electrical work requiring licensing may require Master Electrician or journeyman license per Maryland rules.

Responsibilities

• Maintain daily operations of facility systems including HVAC, lighting, plumbing and preventative maintenance.
• Perform new construction, installations, alterations, renovations, painting and repairs of facility equipment.
• Conduct grounds maintenance and snow removal as needed to ensure safety and security of youth and staff.
• Respond to emergencies after hours as required.

The Skilled Trades Specialist IV is responsible for the daily uninterrupted operation of the Charles H. Hickey Jr. Center and handles maintenance duties such as HVAC, lighting, plumbing and preventative maintenance. The Skilled Trades Specialist IV may also handle new construction, installations, alterations, renovations, painting, repairs of facility equipment, electrical work and grounds maintenance/snow removal in order to maintain the facility, ensuring the safety and security of the youth and the staff at the Charles H. Hickey Center...

Some key responsibilities of this position may include, but not be limited, to the following

• Personnel will be subject to respond to Emergencies after hour calls

Safely operate and perform work from elevated equipment, including step ladders, extension ladders, scissor lifts, and articulating boom lifts.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Five years of experience performing skilled trade work in plumbing, carpentry, electrical, HVAC, locksmith, masonry, painting, or welding work.

Note

• Candidates may substitute additional years of experience for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
• Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher, as a non-commissioned officer in utilities classifications or mechanical maintenance management specialty codes in utility systems repair, on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

• Structural framing, drywall installation and finishing
• Knowledge of understanding of mechanical and electrical drawings
• Building Maintenance

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

• Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
• Employees in this classification who perform electrical work and are assigned to facilities that mandate licensed electricians must possess a current license as a Master Electrician or other appropriate electrician license from a local board or from the Maryland State Board of Master Electricians, 500 N. Calvert Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21202-3651.
• Employees in this classification who perform work as a plumber must possess a Maryland Journeyman/Gas Fitter License.
