Job description

Position Summary

Performs a variety of responsibilities related to the preventative maintenance, repair, fabrication, general maintenance, installation, inspection, service, and operation associated with being a plumber/pipefitter while ensuring compliance with state regulations. Remains available to respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis; responds to emergencies to minimize and/or eliminate the need for school closures due to mechanical failure. Performs maintenance and service in other trade areas such as Electrical, Carpentry, Roofing, HVAC, and Boiler repair. Performs snow plowing activities as needed.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Schedules and performs regular inspections necessary for basic preventative maintenance on plumbing systems.
  • Troubleshoots, repairs, fabricates, maintains, installs, inspects, services, and/or operates building equipment and/or building structures associated with plumbing, etc.
  • Troubleshoots, repairs, maintains, services, installs district heating and cooling piping and related valves, pumps, and controls.
  • Receives requests for service, prioritizes requests and schedules work schedules to respond to work orders.
  • Verifies and approves requisitions; and orders, controls and accounts for supplies and equipment in order to maintain inventory records.
  • Inspects jobs, equipment, and tools in order to assure compliance with codes, guidelines, school standards, and safety rules.
  • Inspects plans, prints, sketches and specifications for all jobs and provides technical assistance.
  • Evaluates and tests new products, equipment, and processes.
  • Responds to questions, complaints, and needs of school district staff, students, parents, and the public in order to provide technical and trade information and assistance.
  • Prepares records and service reports of job time and materials expended on the work order.
  • Assists in maintenance and repair of electrical, carpentry, roofing, HVAC, and boiler systems.
  • Assists in snowplow activities.
  • Performs other related duties as directed by the supervisor.

Education:

This position requires a high school diploma or general education degree (G.E.D.).

Experience:

  • Minimum of one year of related experience as a plumber and/or pipefitter, required.
  • Experience as a commercial journeyman, required.
  • Three to five years of related experience, preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, or Registrations:

A Master Plumber license that allows for the individual to pull permits is preferred; If one does not currently possess this license they are required to obtain this license.

Backflow testing certification, preferred; If one does not currently possess will be required to obtain.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of plumbing systems and processes, required.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, equipment, occupational hazards, and safety precautions related to building maintenance and plumbing, required.
  • Knowledge of pneumatic controls, required.

Abilities:

  • Ability to read and interpret district policies, guidelines, blueprints, diagrams, schematic drawings, handbook, and government regulations, required.
  • Ability to read and comprehend safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, required.
  • Ability to estimate quantities of material and labor to complete work orders, required.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence, required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively using the English language with students and school administrators and staff, required.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form, required.
  • Ability to solve practical problems involving several concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists, required.
  • Ability to effectively use basic computer software applications, required.
  • Ability to perform job duties using various types of equipment and tools including but not limited to power tools, ladders, hand tools, etc., required.
  • Ability to perform job duties in extreme hot and/or cold temperatures, required.

Skills:

  • Commercial Journeyman Plumber, required.
  • Master Plumber license, preferred.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include vision, and ability to adjust focus, especially due to concentration when reading instructions.

Work Environment:

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
