Job description

Join us! Underground Skilled Helper duties will include general labor duties related to telecommunications construction as directed by the Foreman/Supervisor.

What you'll do...

  • All phases of underground construction include but are not limited to: loading, driving, delivery, digging, removal, and placement of various types, sizes, and weights of construction materials and equipment.
  • Hand dig using shovel, mechanical tools.
  • Install and maintain underground telecommunications cabling.
  • Climb into and out of equipment (trucks, cars, backhoes, trenchers, etc.).
  • Operate or work around heavy equipment and machinery.
  • Work in congested or remote areas.
  • Maintain visual and audible contact with other crew members and all moving or stationary persons/vehicles/objects to ensure safe coordination of movement.
  • Perform general construction work under the direction of Foreman/Supervisor.
  • Flagging, property, or worksite restoration.
  • Maintain safe working habits/conditions according to all regulations, procedures, and policies.

Who we're looking for...

  • Minimum 2 years of machine experience with rock saw, micro trench, backhoe, excavator, and skid steer.
  • Basic knowledge of and ability to operate various types of utility trucks and equipment safely.
  • Basic knowledge of and ability to use hand tools and equipment safely.
  • Effective communication skills with customers, employees, etc.
  • Regular and timely attendance is essential.
  • Ability to work at least 8 hours per day, 5 days a week. May be required to work overtime, after hours, weekends, for emergencies, or on-call.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Class A Commercial Driver's License.
  • 6 months of experience in utility construction.
  • Ability to read prints and interpret utility maps to identify underground utilities.

Physical Requirements

  • Stand, crouch, sit, bend, handle or feel with hands and fingers, reach high and low. Climb, balance, crawl, lift, hold, or stoop during shifts.
  • Work while wearing safety boots, glasses, and hardhat.
  • Work in adverse weather conditions including extreme heat, cold, wind, rain, snow, sleet, dust, and fog.
  • Potential exposure to dust, fumes, or airborne pathogens.
  • Lift/carry 50 lbs. regularly and up to 100 lbs. as needed, with or without assistance.
