Public Utilities Department - Water Treatment Plant Division
Salary Range: $17.75 - $29.28 Hourly / $36,920.00 - $60,902.40 Annually
FLSA Position Class: Non-Exempt
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 7 AM - 3:30 PM

Job Overview
Responsible for semi-skilled work in a variety of janitorial, landscaping, and repair assignments involving the use of specialized tools and equipment within the city’s water and wastewater treatment department.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
NOTE: Employee may be required to respond to a disaster, either natural or man-made, to serve the citizens of Statesville. Service to the citizens during a disaster may result in the assignment of other duties, which will take precedence over duties described in this job description. This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive. Employees may perform other related duties as needed to meet the needs of the organization.
- Performs a variety of manual work in connection with the landscaping, light maintenance, and janitorial needs within the water and wastewater treatment department.
- Operates front end deck mowers, zero turn mowers, turf tractors, and other power equipment.
- Mows areas around the facility, tank sites, pump stations, and other appurtenances of water or wastewater plants.
- Assists operations and maintenance teams as needed for repairs and operations of departmental duties.
- Performs ground and building maintenance as well as landscaping duties on a regular basis.
- Performs janitorial work and general cleaning on a frequent basis.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED.
- One (1) year of experience in janitorial, landscaping, or light maintenance duties.
Special Requirements
- Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license, or any valid driver’s license with ability to obtain a North Carolina driver’s license within 60 days of establishing a permanent residence in North Carolina.

- Thorough knowledge of janitorial and landscaping tasks.
- Thorough knowledge in the use of common and specialized hand and power tools required in the work.
- Thorough knowledge of the safe use, operation, and preventive maintenance of mechanical equipment required in the work.
- Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.
- Ability to operate a variety of hand and power tools.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to communicate ideas clearly, concisely, and effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, other departments, supervisors, and the general public.
- Interacts with the public in a professional manner.
Job Related Physical Activity Requirements
This position involves heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical activity related to this position may require the use of fingers and hands, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to respond to spoken words, to receive and understand information, and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for assembly or fabrication of parts at/or within arm’s length, operation of machines or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.
Working Conditions
The employee is subject to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold, vibration, noise, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation, oils, cutting fluids, and hazards including work around operating machinery, uneven surfaces, and narrow or confined spaces. Employees may be required to wear a respirator or mask during certain circumstances. Employees may be required to work nights, weekends, or during emergency situations when needed.
