Town of West Springfield seeks a Public Works Laborer to support street and facility maintenance. You will receive work orders, plan materials, and select methods to complete projects, including snow removal and routine repairs to equipment, assets, and buildings.
The role requires a high school diploma with two years of relevant experience, a valid driver's license (CDL preferred), and adherence to safety standards.
Work requires a high school graduate or an equivalent plus two years’ relevant experience or equivalent combination of knowledge and expertise to perform the essential functions of this position.
Possession of a valid driver’s license required; CDL preferred. Due to the nature of the work and possible exposure to sewage and/or human waste , the Center for Disease recommends employees should be vaccinated for Tetanus with consideration also given to the need for vaccinations for polio, typhoid fever, Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B.
Must have a comprehensive experience in Public Works construction or maintenance work or any equivalent combination of education and experience required to perform the essential functions of this position. Must have general knowledge of the methods, techniques, procedures, equipment and materials relating to various water systems construction and maintenance tasks. Must have mechanical aptitude to operate various types of equipment that would be found in flood and sewer stations as well as other public works systems.

Work requires agility and physical strength, such as moving in or about construction sites or over rough terrain or standing or walking most of the work period. Must be able to work in an environment subject to continuous interruptions and background noises; climb onto ladders, platforms, and equipment; work in all weather conditions; operate equipment requiring hand and eye coordination and mechanical aptitude; access and negotiate difficult places and varied terrain; lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds; work independently with minimal supervision. Shall comply with OSHA 1910.134 - Respiratory protection standards.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to use arms, hands, and fingers to: handle, reach and feel objects; operate tools and controls. Able to walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and smell while performing, supervising, or inspecting work, including construction projects often on uneven ground. Able to engage in frequent walking, to bend, to stand, to squat, climbing, and occasional sustained physical effort.
