Job summary

Dodge Ridge Mountain Resort seeks a dedicated Ski Patroller to join its mountain safety team in Pinecrest, CA. The role focuses on guest service, emergency response, and on-mountain safety, while also serving as an information hub for visitors.

Summary of Job Purpose

Ski Patrol is a team-oriented department focused on providing our guests with excellent customer service on or off the mountain. In addition to emergency rescues and mountain safety, ski patrollers are hosts, guides and information centers. When called upon, ski patrol will respond to whatever the task may be.

This job description is intended as a summary of the primary responsibilities of and the qualificationsfor the position. The job description is not intended to be inclusive of all duties an individual in the position might be asked to perform or of all the qualifications that may be required now or in the future. A Ski Patroller is expected to be a safe skiing/boarding example to the public. No use of jumps, boxes, rails, or other such features in terrain parks is allowed.

Duties
  • Lead by example.
  • Responsible for coordination and documentation of training and proficiency of all patrollers

Knowledge of and adherence to ANSI B77.1 requirements.
  • Prepare interested patrollers for APP clinics, striving for certified results.
  • Responsible for maintaining up to date training materials for the 2 patrol shacks
  • Assist with revisions and additions to departmental manuals and guidelines.
  • Daily employee appearance inspections.
  • Working knowledge of the emergency plan.
  • Planning.
  • Schedule work accordingly during operating hours.
  • Set goals and objectives and develop action plans.
  • Set priorities and complete tasks in a timely matter.
  • Foresee problems and opportunities.
  • Good time management.
  • Delegate.
  • Follow through with mountain hill safety procedures under the direction of the patrol director and patrol manager, and mtn operations.
  • Daily: review, collect and file daily work logs.
  • Record keeping of all ski patrol training.
  • Record keeping of all safety training.
  • Involved in annual NSP proficiency check offs.
  • On going training.
  • Prepare daily work assignments.
  • Prepare patrollers for inspections and interviews from State, USFS and insurance company.
  • Requires knowledge that all lifts and mountain trails are operational and that the operating personnel are equipped and fit to perform their duties.
  • Assist with Search and Rescue, including all documentation and billing information.
  • Enforcement of safety rules.
  • Emergency Care and Rescue.
  • All mountain safety and maintenance; slope safety, boundary marking, flagging, mazes, signage and any situation.
  • Demonstrate an on-going commitment to delivering excellent customer service. This involves interacting with guests in a courteous manner and being able to answer questions professionally.
  • Professional, friendly, communication with other departments.
  • Help other departments as needed, shoveling, flagging, maze control, snow removal, etc.
  • Direct lift evacuations with the coordination of the patrol director and patrol manager.
  • Maintain clean, safe, and professional workstations.
  • Maintain any appropriate records as set forth by company policy and procedures.
  • Recognize and correct any safety hazards within the ski patrol department.

Must qualify through the Dodge Ridge Fleet Safety Program by possessing a valid driver's license and passing a satisfactory OMV record check to operate a snowmobile.
  • Satisfactory completion of the Snowmobile Safety Program to operate a snowmobile.
  • Safe operation of a snowmobile in a variety of terrain and snow conditions.
  • Must be well groomed and present a good public image.
  • Good physical condition as this position requires skiing/boarding, hiking, shoveling, lifting and carrying.
  • Willingness to work during extreme weather conditions.
  • Safety and risk oriented.
  • Requires the skills of a host. This involves approaching guests in a courteous manner, inquiring if they have any questions and being able to respond professionally.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and meet the Motor Vehicle Record qualifications as outlined in the Fleet Safety Program.

Work Schedules

Weather conditions and the number of guests play a large role in the work scheduling of Dodge Ridge employees.

When conditions are normal, you may be expected to work 40 up to 48 hours per week, including weekends and holidays. During busy periods, you may be expected to work six (6) days a week.

Work schedules, staffing levels and weather conditions may dictate when lunches and breaks will be taken.

You must arrange for transportation to work so you arrive at your designated workstation at the scheduled time. Keep in mind that you will often be required to drive on hilly, snow packed, and icy surfaces.

Working Conditions

At any time during the ski season, Dodge Ridge employees are often required to perform their tasks in high winds, heavy snowfall, low visibility, rain and extremely cold or warm temperatures.

Work is typically outside working directly with resort guests and other resort staff members. It can be noisy, cold, wet, or humid. You may be expected to work in high places and frequently you will work around moving objects.

Uniforms

A professional appearance at Dodge Ridge is required. Please wear your name tag and uniform at all times during your scheduled shift. We will provide most of the uniform for you to do your job. However, you will be required to provide some items as part of your job. The quality, color, and style of the items must be approved by your manager prior to being worn to work. All hats worn must have the Dodge Ridge logo while on shift.

  • Ski/ snowboard equipment and ski bindings that pass a binding function test (you should be aware you are responsible for any damage to your equipment while at work.)

The skiing/boarding employee represents a model for safe skiing/boarding for both the guest and fellow employees. You are required to be aware of all safe skiing/boarding procedures, trail closures, and out-of-bounds policies.
