Job summary

Wasatch Peaks Ranch is looking for a Ski Patrol member to manage the medical and safety aspects for members and guests in a dynamic mountain environment. The role requires hands-on patient care, avalanche risk reduction, and intensive customer service. You will operate in all weather conditions and must meet physical fitness requirements.

Preferred candidates have a high school diploma and several years of ski patrol experience. Leadership abilities and knowledge of mountain weather are essential for success in this position.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years ski patrol experience or equivalent.
  • Must hold current CPR and medical certification at the EMT, OEC, or WFR level.
  • Valid Driver’s license required.

  • Documents incidents using SmartMtn and GIS-based software.

Job description

Job Summary

Manages the medical and safety aspects for the members, member guests and employees of Wasatch Peaks Ranch in a constantly changing mountain environment. This includes avalanche risk reduction, hands‑on patient care, transportation, intensive customer service and interdepartmental cooperation. The position requires working outside in a variety of weather conditions and a high level of fitness.

Responsibilities
  • Administers first aid and patient transportation in the event of a medical emergency.
  • Operates snowmobiles safely for operational and patient transport needs.
  • Performs all aspects of lift evacuation, including tower climbing, ground belay, line riding, and other unique evacuation scenarios.
  • Performs technical rope rescue using a variety of technical equipment including high‑angle rescue and sled belay.
  • Operates as a mountain dispatcher and, when required, as a central dispatcher during avalanche risk‑reduction work.
  • Documents all incidents, snow‑safety efforts and accident investigations using SmartMtn and other GIS‑based software.
  • Provides industry‑leading customer service to members and guests, including mountain information, evacuation from difficult situations, lost‑equipment recovery and safety education.
  • Possesses knowledge and understanding of mountain weather, forecasting and computer weather models.
  • Assists the snow‑safety team with snow stability evaluations and terrain recommendations.
  • Performs avalanche risk‑reduction work as directed by the snow‑safety team.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in all facets of avalanche rescue, both in‑bounds and out‑of‑bounds.
  • Maintains rope lines, signage, pads, fences and other equipment to identify and mark mountain hazards.
  • Performs opening and closing procedures daily.
  • Performs maintenance and repairs on equipment as necessary.
  • Exhibits strong communication and guest‑relations skills.
  • Shows strong leadership and decision‑making skills.
  • Works well with others and performs other duties as assigned.
Level Requirements
Level I Patroller – Beginner
  • Meet the requirements of Basic Patroller.
  • Minimum 3 years ski patrol experience at Wasatch Peaks Ranch or equivalent.
  • Full understanding of evacuation techniques for all lifts at Wasatch Peaks Ranch.
  • Solid grasp of avalanche paths and risk‑reduction strategies for the terrain.
  • Capability of leading a risk‑reduction team through avalanche terrain.
  • Ability to serve as an AvSAR team leader during an avalanche rescue.
  • Capacity to manage a multi‑patient medical incident.
Level II Patroller – Intermediate
  • Meet the requirements of Basic Patroller.
  • Minimum 7 years ski patrol experience at Wasatch Peaks Ranch or equivalent.
  • Advanced evacuation techniques for all lift types, including downhill chairs and z‑drags.
  • Advanced understanding of avalanche paths and risk‑reduction strategies.
  • Lead risk‑reduction teams through multiple routes and act as an AvSAR site commander.
  • Knowledge of out‑of‑bounds avalanche terrain and rescue implications.
  • Proficiency in triage during multi‑patient medical incidents.
Level III Patroller – Advanced
  • Meet the requirements of Intermediate Patroller.
  • Minimum 7 years ski patrol experience at Wasatch Peaks Ranch or equivalent.
  • Expert evacuation techniques for all lift configurations, including special scenarios.
  • Leadership as an AvSAR site commander in complex rescue situations.
  • Expertise in out‑of‑bounds avalanche terrain and rescue implications.
  • Advanced medical triage and multi‑patient incident management.
Credit and Safety Requirements
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Ability to obtain an ATF explosives handler permit.
  • Current CPR and medical certification at the EMT, OEC, or WFR level (must certify at OEC level or higher by the start of season).
Educational Requirements
  • High School Diploma.
Physical Requirements
  • Safely ski all terrain at an expert level.
  • Hike and ski steep, exposed terrain in arduous conditions with packs up to 60 pounds.
  • Read and write in English.
  • Communicate verbally and effectively with parties, with or without two‑way radios.
  • Follow and give verbal and written instructions.
  • Understand ski resort operations.
  • Supervise subordinates.
  • Visually inspect all work areas.
  • Operate equipment for several hours at a time.
  • Perform basic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
  • Read and interpret information from technical sources.
  • Stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, twist, turn, bend, and kneel for extended periods.
  • Lift up to 75 lbs occasionally, 50 lbs frequently, and 10 lbs constantly.
