Job summary

Sundance Mountain Resort seeks Ski Patrol: Candidate to promote mountain safety, handle emergencies on skis, and assist guests with information. Responsibilities include first aid, avalanche control, and rescue operations, with duties performed primarily on terrain.

Seasonal, full-time work; availability on holidays and weekends is required. Shifts run 8:00 AM–5:00 PM and some nights 4:00 PM–10:00 PM, with early morning control work as needed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• OEC/EMT-B or higher certification is required.
• CPR certification is required.
• Must be an intermediate to advanced skier.
• Experience with rope systems and rescue equipment is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Administer first aid and transport injured individuals within Sundance Ski area.
• Package patients for transport using toboggan and assist mountain rescue operations.
• Follow helicopter protocols and know landing zones.
• Conduct avalanche reduction activities during hazardous periods.
• Maintain rescue equipment and area signage, fences, and related safety assets.
• Perform search and rescue within and beyond ski area boundaries.
• Complete accident reports with accurate details for investigations.
• Enforce ski area policies and communicate skier responsibilities clearly.
• Provide calm, courteous guest assistance and uphold guest safety as a priority.

Summary

Promote general mountain safety by marking boundaries and hazards, participating in avalanche mitigation work, responding to emergencies (medical, search & rescue, weather, etc.), and engaging guests in an informative and pleasant manner. Perform majority of duties on skis.

• Administer first aid and transport injured skiers or persons visiting or working at Sundance Ski area.
• Properly package patient and transport with toboggan.
• Knowledge of helicopter protocols and location of landing zones.
• Participate with supervisor in avalanche reduction mitigates avalanche-prone areas throughout the day during hazardous periods.
• Exhibit a working knowledge and training of application of explosives, participating with supervisor in avalanche reduction program.
• Become familiar with avalanche rescue procedures as well as the location and inventories of available rescue equipment.
• Carry out search and rescue for persons within and out of bounds of the ski area boundaries.
• Learn and carry out end of day and morning sweep operations.
• Demonstrate proficiency with lift evacuation procedures and location of and use of lift evacuation equipment.
• Exhibit knowledge of area plan for placement and daily maintenance of signs, bamboo, ropes, fences, etc.
• Participate in regular sweeps of runs in your assigned complex to identify and remove any problem areas.
• Fill out accident reports completely, correctly, and legibly. Gather supplemental information for accident investigations.
• Be helpful and courteous to fellow workers and the skiing public.
• Provide assistance and advice to skiers in a friendly manner.
• Remain calm and use tact in dealing with emergencies, violations and unusual circumstances.
• Upgrade and refresh skills yearly. Help familiarize new patrollers in learning job duties.
• Enforce ski area policies and procedures and update knowledge each year as necessary.
• Know the skier responsibility code and use it to advise skiers of the established rules of the road.
• Emphasize that guest safety is our concern.
• Provide a safe skiing environment by actively warning or removing skiers whose conduct is reckless and a danger to themselves or others.
• Inspect condition of patrol equipment and keep all patrol facilities clean and in good repair.

Qualifications

• To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Intermediate to advanced skier.
• Working knowledge or background with rope systems, anchoring/belaying etc is helpful.
• Avalanche awareness classes or backcountry experience with avalanches preferred.
• Use of two-way radio.
• Must possess a current Utah OEC, or EMT-B or higher certification.
• Must possess a current CPR certification.
• Must possess a valid U.S. Drivers' License in good standing as determined by Sundance's Insurance Company guidelines.
