Job summary

The City of Elk River seeks an experienced Skating Academy Instructor Level III to teach Learn to Skate programs from Snow Plow Sam through Basic 5, ensuring a safe, positive, and fun learning environment for skaters of all ages.

The part-time, on-site position pays starting at $20/hour, with a 2026 range of $20–$24/hour. Eligible employees receive ESST and PERA benefits.

Qualifications

Description

The City of Elk River is seeking an experienced skater and instructor for our Skating Academy. The Instructor Level III will teach Learn to Skate classes from Snow Plow Sam through Basic 5 while creating a safe, positive and fun learning environment.

Starting pay: $20/hour (2026 range: $20–$24/hour). Part-time position with Earned Sick and Safe Time and PERA benefits, if eligible.

Seasonal and part-time employees performing work for at least 80 hours in a year for the City are eligible for Earned Safe and Sick Time (ESST). ESST is paid at the same hourly rate that an employee is paid from employment with the City. ESST will accrue at a rate of one hour per 30 hours worked, up to a maximum of 48 hours of ESST per year. ESST begins to accrue at the commencement of employment. Employees may begin using ESST once they have worked 80 hours.

Position Summary
Under the direction of the Skating Director and the Assistant Manager, the Skating Academy Instructor Level III instructs participants in “Learn to Skate” programs.

Essential Functions

• Assists in the instruction of the Learn to Skate program.
• Teaches the Learn to Skate classes as required.
• Tracks students attendance and progress.
• Assists in controlling the students both on and off the ice.
• Establishes and maintains good relationships with the public.
• Maintains punctuality in arriving and departing at schedule times.
• Assists in annual ice show as assigned.
• Following class criteria, instructs students according to their appropriate ability level.
• Performs other essential job duties.
• Regular and timely work attendance.
• Follows all safety procedures and participates in safety training.
• Provides a safe and fun learning environment.
• Follows the policies and procedures of the FTCenter.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of basic ice skating skills.
• Ability to teach USFS Snow Plow Sam through Basic 5.
• Ability to be in skates and on the ice for a minimum of 3 hours.

Minimum Qualifications

• Six years of experience teaching in a group setting.
• Past participation in group lessons in an established school, club, or apprenticeship program.
• Three years of experience with production of an ice show or equivalent.
