Park District of Oak Park is seeking a Skate Guard for Ridgeland Common Recreation Complex in Oak Park, IL. This part-time role offers competitive pay at $15.40 per hour, along with PTO and an employee discount for part-time staff.

The Skate Guard helps keep the ice rink welcoming, safe, and well-managed during Public Skate Sessions, enforcing park rules, assisting with birthday parties, and supporting shop and concessions as needed.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Must be a proficient ice skater.
  • Must have the ability to solve problems as they arise and be able to perform tasks without supervision.
  • Must be highly motivated and able to assume a positive and active role in the park, even under potentially stressful conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Greet patrons as they arrive.
  • Maintain order and enforce rules on the ice during Public Skate Sessions.
  • Maintain a safe and secure environment for staff, patrons and participants by maintaining a visible presence and watching for injuries.
  • Understand, follow and enforce all Park District rules and make announcements during intermission.
  • Assist birthday parties by executing party functions providing customer service and assisting with party activities.
  • Enforce the Public Skate Behavior Management Policy.
  • Provide excellent customer service and address questions and concerns from staff, patrons, participants, and parents immediately.
  • Become familiar with patrons; know their names, personalities, skills and interests.
  • Ensure facility cleanliness and upkeep.
  • Inspect equipment daily for possible maintenance needs and adjustments.
  • Complete all logs, reports, checklists, and other paperwork as needed.
  • Assist with tasks at the skate shop and concessions as necessary.
  • Inventory and monitor first aid kit supplies; requisition supplies as needed.

Overview:

The Skate Guard is a Part-Time Position. We offer competitive compensation, PTO and an employee discount for part-time employees.

Job Purpose:

The Skate Guard is responsible for maintaining an inviting, positive, and safe environment at the Ridgeland Common Ice Rink. The Skate Guard maintains order and enforces rules on the ice during Public Skate Sessions and is expected to be visible and engaged in activities on the ice. The Skate Guard effectively communicates and enforces Park District rules, regulations, and policies to the public.

Essential Functions:
  • Greet patrons as they arrive.
  • Maintain order and enforce rules on the ice during Public Skate Sessions.
  • Maintain a safe and secure environment for staff, patrons and participants by maintaining a visible presence and watching for injuries.
  • Understand, follow and enforce all Park District rules and make announcements during intermission. Communicate and enforce rules and policies to participants and patrons.
  • Assist birthday parties by executing party functions providing customer service and assisting with party activities.
  • Enforce the Public Skate Behavior Management Policy.
  • Provide excellent customer service and maintain a positive public image by addressing questions and concerns from staff, patrons, participants, and parents immediately.
  • Become familiar with patrons; know their names, personalities, skills and interests.
  • Ensure facility cleanliness and upkeep.
  • Inspect equipment daily for possible maintenance needs and adjustments.
  • Complete all logs, reports, checklists, and other paperwork as needed.
  • Assist with tasks at the skate shop and concessions as necessary.
  • Inventory and monitor first aid kit supplies; requisition supplies as needed.
  • Return all equipment to its proper place as specified by Park District.
  • Wear a PDOP staff shirt and identification during all work hours.
Additional Functions:
  • Occasionally assist with events and programs.
  • Attend staff meetings and training programs as specified.
  • Complete other duties as assigned by supervisor or other Park District administrative personnel.
Knowledge, Skill, and Work ExperienceRequired:
  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Must be a proficient ice skater.
  • Must have the ability to solve problems as they arise and be able to perform tasks without supervision.
  • Must be highly motivated and able to assume a positive and active role in the park, even while working under potentially stressful conditions (hot or cold weather, upset or injured participants, etc.).
  • Must have the ability to be firm with participants when necessary, enforce park district rules, and make sound decisions in order to secure the safety and well-being of all park visitors, facilities, and equipment.
  • Must be able to complete required Park District training.
  • Certification in advanced Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), First Aid and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) within 1 month of employment and keep certification current. The District provides this training.
Preferred:
  • Experience working with youth, especially in a recreation setting.
Work environment, Physical Demands and Considerations
  • Frequent skating, walking, running, standing, reaching, bending.
  • Must be able to lift up to 35 lbs
  • Will be exposed to cold temperatures on the ice for long periods and frequent temperature changes from warm to cold.
  • Will be exposed to occasional inclement weather including heat, humidity, cold, rain, snow, ice and wind.
  • Ability to work independently without supervision.
  • Ability to present ideas and recommendations in a concise manner.
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and/or written instructions efficiently and effectively and to read and understand printed material.
  • Ability to operate assigned equipment.
  • Ability to effectively interact and communicate well with others.
  • Ability to interpret and explain division and District policies and procedures.
  • Ability to follow safety guidelines and exercise judgment in all aspects of responsibility.
  • Ability to resolve conflict safely, calmly and effectively
