Job summary

Janotta & Herner is seeking a Site Work & Heavy Equipment Operator to prepare construction sites for building projects. The role involves operating heavy machinery, installing underground utilities, and ensuring ground is leveled and ready for foundation work.

The ideal candidate will hold a CDL and a valid driver’s license, have experience with GPS-equipped equipment, and be able to read blueprints and project documents. This is an outdoor, fast-paced role requiring strong safety practices.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Operate bulldozers, graders, excavators, backhoes, loaders, trucks safely and efficiently.
  • Prepare sites and install underground utilities including storm piping systems.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections and basic equipment maintenance.
  • Interact professionally with customers and team members; follow safety policies.
  • Work with GPS and non-GPS equipment and use transit/lasers as needed.

Job description

Job Title: Site Work & Heavy Equipment Operator

Company: Janotta & Herner

Reports to: Director of Construction Operations

FLSA: Hourly

Position Summary

The Site Work & Heavy Equipment Operator plays a critical role in preparing construction sites for building projects. This position involves operating a variety of heavy machinery and equipment to perform excavation, grading, trenching, and other site preparation tasks. Install underground utilities with a focus on storm piping systems and associated structures (e.g., catch basins, manholes, culverts). The operator ensures that the ground is properly leveled, compacted, and ready for foundation work, contributing directly to the success and safety of the construction process.

Essential Functions
  • Perform efficient safe operation of bulldozers, graders, excavators, backhoes, wheel/track loaders, dump trucks, and other equipment in compliance with company policies
  • Safely move material in a manner which does not endanger personnel or equipment
  • Conduct pre-trip/post trip inspections on equipment and complete necessary forms.
  • Daily maintenance of equipment

  • Other duties as assigned
  • Perform operations with GPS and/or Non-GPS equipment.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record
  • CDL required
  • Ability to safely haul equipment and drive loaded dump trucks
  • Ability to drive manual transmission
  • Strong knowledge of site work methods, safety practices, and heavy equipment operations
  • Experience operating and setting up GPS equipped equipment
  • Proficient with setting up and using transit and lasers
  • Ability to work from jobsite provided blueprints plans and project documents
  • Knowledge of Ohio EPA and SWP3 requirements
  • Proven leadership experience
  • Attention to detail and strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, outdoor environment, and handle varying weather conditions
  • Excellent communication skills
