We are hiring a Site Reliability / Gitops Engineer for our Information Systems (IS) team. This role offers an opportunity for an automation-focused technologist passionate about Linux to build a career with Canonical and support those leveraging Ubuntu and open source products. If you have experience in IT operations automation, Infrastructure as Code, and a passion for technology, you'll enjoy working with some of the best in the industry at Canonical.

Job Summary

The IS team supports and maintains all of Canonical's IT production services, serving over 60 million Ubuntu users.

As an SRE & Gitops engineer, you'll drive operations automation in private and public clouds using open source infrastructure as code software, CI/CD practices, and Canonical's automation products. You will also provide feedback to developers to improve product operations at scale, collaborating across teams and supporting a global team of SREs.

This role is remote, open to any timezone.

Key Responsibilities

1. Develop and improve infrastructure as code practices to enhance automation.
2. Automate software operations for reusability and consistency across clouds.
3. Enhance the resilience and scalability of cloud and container portfolios.
4. Maintain operational responsibility for core services, networks, and infrastructure.
5. Set up and maintain observability tools like Prometheus, Grafana, Elasticsearch.
6. Collaborate on service architecture, documentation, and operational procedures.
7. Support and collaborate with distributed engineering and support teams.
8. Focus on automation projects and manual task reduction.
9. Share expertise through design sessions, mentorship, and teamwork.
10. Handle time-critical escalations responsibly.

Candidate Profile

1. Experience defining operations in code with version control and CI/CD.
2. Strong engineering background with peer review, testing, SCM, Agile.
3. Proficiency in Python, with experience on large projects.
4. Knowledge of Linux networking, routing, firewalls.
5. Experience with Linux storage solutions like Ceph and Databases.
6. Hands-on Linux server administration skills.
7. Understanding of cloud computing concepts and technologies.
8. Bachelor’s degree or higher in computer science or related field.
9. Effective communication skills in English.
10. Motivated troubleshooting skills from kernel to web.
11. Flexible, quick learner, and open to new challenges.
12. Comfortable working in distributed teams.
13. Passionate about open source, especially Ubuntu or Debian.
