Job summary

Princeton University is seeking a Site Protection Technician within Facilities Operation to perform comprehensive inspection, testing, and repairs of life safety systems across campus, including fire, sprinkler, standpipe systems, fire pumps, kitchen hood systems, special hazards, extinguishers, and emergency broadcast towers.

You will document results, use PlanOn CMMS to generate work orders, and coordinate with the Life Safety Inspection & Testing Supervisor and other departments.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED with 3+ years in life safety systems testing/maintenance.
• Strong knowledge of NFPA codes and International Fire Code NJ Addition.
• Ability to inspect, test, maintain and repair life safety systems and document results.
• Excellent verbal and written communication; able to work with diverse audiences.
• Experience using CMMS to generate work orders and track tasks.

Overview

As a member of the Facilities Operation, and under the direction of the Supervisor of Life Safety Inspection & Testing, and working collaboratively with other University departments, the Site Protection Technician is responsible for the comprehensive inspection, testing, and related repairs to the University’s Life Safety System, including but not limited to fire, sprinkler, standpipe systems, fire pumps, and emergency broadcast towers, kitchen hood systems, special hazard systems, and fire extinguishers. The technician will assume responsibility for all the documentation related to these inspections.

Responsibilities

This position will be responsible for performing all campus Fire and Life Safety Systems code-related inspections, testing, maintenance, repairs and ensuring they are properly documented in accordance with NFPA and current local fire code requirements.

This position will be responsible for performing all testing activities safely and in compliance with University and OSHA safety standards and practices.

Testing, Inspections, Maintenance and Repairs

• Perform testing, inspections, maintenance, and repairs of life safety systems. Ensure a high level of quality, efficient, code compliant work. Life safety systems include but are not limited to fire, sprinkler, standpipe systems, fire pumps, kitchen hood systems, special hazard systems, fire extinguishers and emergency broadcast towers. Testing and inspections of systems will be performed in accordance with (NFPA) guidelines as adopted into code by the state and local municipalities.
• Work with our computerized maintenance system (PlanOn) and field inspection programs to receive and generate work orders.

Support and Administrative

• Assist Site Protection’s Life Safety Inspection & Testing Supervisor, Department Scheduler Planner and Life Safety System Testing & Inspection Program Coordinator with data collection on new and renovation projects.
• As necessary, carry out shop work assignments and assist tradesmen with critical and urgent shop tasks. Attend department approved safety and technical training. Assist in other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications

• Education/Experience – possess a high school diploma (or GED) and technical education related to the inspection, troubleshooting, and repairs of Life Safety Systems, and have 3 or more years of full-time work experience in the testing, inspection, maintenance, and repairs of Life Safety Systems.
• Specific Knowledge – possess excellent and broad-based working knowledge of fire codes such as NFPA 80, 70,72,13,20 and 25, along with the International Fire Code NJ Addition.
• Knowledge of Job Function - thorough knowledge of methods associated with inspection, testing, maintenance, repair, and operation of all systems noted above; thorough knowledge of safety regulations and safe work practices; and
• Communication Skills - ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, to a diverse audience, and possess a knowledge of appropriate escalation protocols and political acumen; understanding of modern customer service theories, practices, and methods, and how to apply them.
• Computer Skills - must be familiar with the use of a computerized maintenance-management software program;
• After-Hour Emergency Response – must be able to respond to after normal business hour emergencies and incidents as needed, and on short notice;
• Essential Personnel – must be able to function in an essential personnel role, which may include an extended on-campus presence, as defined in the University’s (Core Essential Policy).

Preferred Qualifications:

• Possess NICET Fire Alarm or Sprinkler Testing & Inspections Level 1 or higher certification.
• Hold a current New Jersey certification as licensed Fire Alarm System or Fire Suppression-Mechanic
• Certified in Simplex 4120 Fire Alarm Network systems or equivalent.
