Job Title: Site-Based Security Officer

Reports To: Site-Based First Line Security Supervisor

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

PURPOSE OF JOB

Working with diverse security staff and other school staff, utilizing equipment and technology in the Integrated Security Systems, and adhering to established safety procedures and protocols to protect students, staff, equipment, and facilities of the Kansas City Public Schools District. The actions of security officers should always be respectful and considerate of students' and staff's emotional and social well-being. Duties require readiness to respond to situations that may be life-threatening or harmful, including exposure to dangerous chemicals, infectious diseases, fire, gunshots, or physical confrontations, in all weather conditions and shifts (day or night). Conduct foot patrols inside and outside assigned schools.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Preserve peace, protect district property, prevent criminal acts, apprehend violators, enforce district policies and the Student Handbook, and follow the Security Department’s Operations Manual.
  • Perform duties under the supervision of the first line security supervisor or assistant security director.
  • Work in all weather conditions and shifts, supporting the 24-hour responsibility of the Security Department.
  • Coordinate with the school principal for daily activities but remain under the management of the Safety & Security Department.
  • Maintain professionalism and objectivity, exercising sound judgment under stress.
  • Respond appropriately to situations, including the use of levels of force as authorized.
  • Communicate effectively verbally, non-verbally, and in writing, ensuring reports are clear and free of errors.
  • Familiarize with district policies, federal and state laws, and city ordinances relevant to the role.
  • Attend required in-service training.
  • Accept transfers within the district as needed.
  • Maintain and clean issued equipment.
  • Respond to calls for service via communication devices.
  • Collaborate with law enforcement and security organizations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

None

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Pass the pre-hire tests and interviews conducted by the Security Department.
  • Pass the pre-employment drug screen, physical abilities test, and psychological exam.
  • Obtain Certificates in IS-100.C and IS-700.b.
  • Qualify for and maintain a Private Officers’ Commission from the Kansas City Missouri Police Department.
  • Be insurable under district insurance policies.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Previous law enforcement and security experience.
  • Experience working with juveniles in schools.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to sit, stand, walk, speak, hear, use hands, reach, bend, stoop, and perform physical confrontations in all weather conditions. Capable of lifting up to 50 lbs, driving, and passing the physical abilities test. Correctable vision to 20/20 and ability to distinguish colors are required.

Length of Work Year: 12 months
