Job description

The Simulation Program Manager will provide operational and strategic leadership for the administration, design, delivery, and evaluation of the BCH Oakland Simulation Program to ensure effectiveness and impact. They will oversee program operations, including personnel, financial and physical resources, simulation technology, policies and procedures, program evaluation, and performance metrics. This includes programs conducted at all BCH Oakland sites, as well as simulation-based outreach programs. They will collaborate with the BCH Medical Director of Simulation, the Clinical Nurse Simulation Educator, and other key stakeholders, including but not limited to quality and patient safety leaders, simulation leads and educators, and other system leaders, to assess needs, develop innovative simulation-based programs, and support their implementation. Support will include activities such as calendar planning and maintenance; working with simulation leaders on programmatic expansion and quality improvement, including outreach programs; managing the budget; tracking outcome measures; overseeing equipment storage and maintenance; and resource allocation. The Program Manager should be well-versed in simulation methodology and may help facilitate front-line simulation activities.

The ideal candidate is a talented professional with diverse life experiences and perspectives who has 5+ years of experience in medical simulation-prior lead or supervisory experience required.

Program Administration and Leadership

Provides strategic and operational leadership for the BCH Oakland Simulation Program in collaboration with the Medical Director of Simulation.

Supports technical innovation in use of simulation.

Manages the overall delivery and day-to-day operations of the BCH Oakland Simulation Program. In conjunction with the Medical Director of Simulation:

• Develops, implements and maintains updated simulation program policies, procedures and protocols.
• Develops and manages simulation calendar to facilitate program scheduling and logistics including availability of equipment and technician to support programs
• Oversees simulation facilitator training program including arranging and managing logistics of class offerings
• Serves as a consultant working with faculty to conceptualize and develop simulation learning experiences for learners and piloting new programs.
• Works with simulation leaders for strategic programmatic expansion inclusive of outreach programs
• Participates in appropriate committee meetings that inform the simulation programming to align with organizational quality and safety priorities and goals
• Prepares and maintains operationalbudget .
• Responds to internal and external customer simulation center inquiries and requests
• Supports annual IAP goals.
• Supports future accreditation goals as applicable.

Resource Coordination

Assists with administration and management of resources, and communicating significant changes as they occur. In conjunction with the Medical Director of Simulation:

• Maintains and keeps updated catalogs of:
  • All simulation equipment and implements check out and return policy
  • All simulation facilitators and program leaders
  • All simulation programs in place along with program leads
• Oversees storage and maintainence of simulation equipment:
  • Ensures that all simulation equipment is in working order and communicates when repairs or maintenance of equipment is necessary.
  • Communicates when there are gaps in equipment availability to support BCH Oakland simulation programs.
  • Establishes strong working relationships with product suppliers and vendors to update and maintain equipment, facilitate purchasing of new equipment/models and when opportunity arises, serve as a beta test site.[KS1]
• Collaborates with Facilities, EHS, EVS to oversee the environmental management in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements including infection prevention, safety and emergency preparedness.
• Performs in simulation scenarios roles as needed: technical support, facilitator, embedded participant (nursing, RT, pharmacy, MD, etc)

Program Evaluation, Quality Improvement & Outcomes

Develops and monitors program metrics and evaluation processes to

Assess learner / program evaluation data trends, compiles and presents data to program leadership, and actively leads and participates in continuous improvement efforts. Leads program pilots to ensure programs are fully functional.

Personnel

• Directly supervises staff that coordinate all activities associated with ongoing implementation of the program.
• Evaluates staff performance and competency and defines development goals.
• Recommends changes in staffing and budget to ensure the efficient operation of the program.
• Participates in recruiting and conducts new employee orientation.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training
• 3+ years of directly relevant experience in simulation-based education and technology
• 3+ years of lead/supervisor/manager experience with demonstrated strategic planning and leadership skills in training and guiding employees on educational techniques. Motivates and inspires staff to improve the health profession education services
• Demonstrated ability to prioritize effectively to meet deadlines in a complex, challenging environment. Ability to organize assigned staff and unit operations in an efficient and effective manner.
• Effective communication skills (verbal and written) with peers, learners, faculty, and other education program coordinators/managers
• Skills to evaluate issues and identify solutions within defined procedures and policies. Demonstrated ability to solve problems and suggest solutions through the critical thinking process
