Job Summary

The Simulation Electronics Engineer provides research‑level electronics engineering support to the Simulation Engineering Branch (Code 580) at NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center under the Engineering and Technical Support Services (ETSS) contract.

This position supports the design, development, and test of a power distribution board used in the cockpit interface unit subsystem. The work consists of designing the electronic circuit card, completing schematic capture in preparation for board production, and testing the circuit card design once returned from the board manufacturer to verify it operates within required operational parameters—or modifying the circuit should it not function as required.

This is a part‑time surge position (up to 20 hours per week). Work may be accomplished offsite within the AFRC area until integration and test activities require onsite presence.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Design an electronic circuit card (power board) to distribute power within the cockpit interface unit subsystem.
  • Complete schematic capture and printed circuit board (PCB) layout in preparation for board production.
  • Define required operational parameters and develop test procedures for circuit card verification.
  • Test the manufactured circuit card to ensure it operates per required operational parameters.
  • Troubleshoot and modify the circuit design should the circuit not function as required.
  • Develop firmware and support data acquisition as required for circuit test and integration.
  • Coordinate with the Simulation Engineering Branch for integration and test of the power board within the cockpit interface unit subsystem.
Key Benefits and Impact
  • Apply deep electronics design expertise to flight research simulation hardware at NASA Armstrong.
  • Own the power board design end‑to‑end—from schematic capture through fabrication, test, and integration.
  • Support the cockpit interface unit subsystem used in real‑time simulation of research aircraft.
  • Enjoy a flexible, part‑time surge schedule with hybrid work until integration and test.
Job Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or greater in Engineering or Physical Science with at least 20 years of experience, including 5 years as a Principal Investigator, Group Leader, Project Engineer, Project Manager, or equivalent (per ETSS Research Engineer labor category; a Master's degree may substitute for 2 years of related experience, a Doctorate for 5 years).
  • Strong understanding of analog and digital electronics theory.
  • Understanding of embedded systems.
  • PCB design and layout experience.
  • Schematic capture experience.
  • Signal processing experience.
  • Advanced programming skills.
  • U.S. Citizenship required (NASA facility access).
Preferred Qualifications
  • AutoCAD experience.
  • Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills.
  • Experience with microcontrollers.
  • Programming experience in C++, C, Java, and/or Python.
