Job description

Position Summary (Basic Job Function)

This is a temporary or on‑call position that functions as a mock patient. The selected individual will respond verbally in a medical interview situation to questions directed by student physicians and provide constructive feedback regarding the students’ interviewing techniques. The role may also include disrobing and responding physically and verbally to a physical examination of the body. The setting is clinical‑like (in‑person or online) and involves portraying cases similar to those learners encounter in real clinical environments. Simulated patients are expected to consistently and accurately portray trained cases, including typical emotions, behaviors, and symptoms, as well as communication, physical examination or both. The individual will provide feedback and/or assess learners using specific measurement tools and will participate in group or individual training sessions to prepare for case portrayals. Work hours are variable and on an on‑call basis.

The Secchia Center, Grand Rapids.

Job Duties

  • Work in a professional manner when interacting with learners, faculty, supervisors and peers.
  • Be comfortable with repeated physical examination performed on self.
  • Be willing to wear a hospital gown with undergarments while on camera or observed live through a video monitor.
  • Recall case details and simulate all aspects of scenarios, including history of current problem, affect/behavior, and physical findings, in a standardized, accurate, and reliable manner.
  • Accurately and consistently complete checklists.
  • Accept ongoing feedback from educators and/or facilitators.
  • Be willing to be audio and videotaped during simulations.
  • Complete required university and departmental trainings in a timely manner.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information related to cases, student behaviors, and feedback evaluations.
  • Proficiently utilize technologies such as email, the internet, and web conferencing software.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
