Job description

I. JOB SUMMARY

As part of the group treatment team, the Supportive Independent Living (SIL) Supervisor plans, directs, and coordinates the activities of the SIL cottage on the agencys campus. The SIL supervisor oversees the cottage to ensure it meets agency expectations and goals, ensures the cottage maintains compliance with agency and DHHS requirements, assess cottage needs, develops goals and ensures that the cottage has a cooperative working relationship with the rest of the program and agency, supervises assigned staff and assists them in their job duties.

II. DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Along with the Employment Specialist and Case Manger the SIL supervisor leads a group treatment team with the responsibility for ensuring each child successfully completes the goals set forth in their treatment plan. Manage the cottage to ensure it operates within the rules, regulations and guidelines set forth by the State of Michigans DHHS, MCHS, and CARF, and CCI. Establish and oversee administrative procedures to meet objectives set by the Director of SIL (DSIL) and the leadership team; participate in developing department goals and objectives. Establish and maintain cottage systems, records and reports; recommend new approaches, policies, and procedures for continual improvement of cottage services. Supervise assigned staff and volunteers to ensure that they are functioning within the requirements of their job duties; provide guidance, training, assistance, and support to staff when needed, including planning, staffing, performance management, professional development, adjusting workloads as necessary, and addressing and resolving complaints to create a climate of teamwork and motivation; perform the duties of an On-Call Supervisor and SIL Resident Advisor as needed. Act as staff expert for the cottage; work with the other supervisors and the DSIL regarding cottage or program licensing/certification rules, re-licensing, complaints, and rulings to ensure ongoing compliance with all agency, licensing, contractual, and legal obligations and requirements. Operate and help in the development of the guidelines of the Employee Handbook, programs Operations Manual, and DHHS Policies and Procedures. Demonstrate commitment to the social sector with a passion for MCHSs mission and vision. Perform other duties as assigned by the DSIL.

III. BASIC COMPETENCIES

Education and Experience: Bachelors degree in a human behavioral science such as Social Work or a related discipline where 25% of the course credits earned toward the degree are in human behavior sciences. Minimum of two (2) years experience in a residential or inpatient setting working with serious emotional disorder (SED) at-risk youth between the ages of 16-21 preferred. Experience as a supervisor in a residential program preferred.

Knowledge Requirements: Computer and software applications (Windows, MS Office, Internet applications, etc.) necessary to perform the duties of the position. The behavior patterns of youth and methods of modifying behavior. Juvenile Justice and Group Home Systems. Group dynamics and sensitivity to individual members of the group.

Effectively communicate verbally and in writing. Relate to youth and gain their respect and confidence. Perform behavior management techniques to control aggressive behavior. Appropriately handle physical and emotional behavior of the youths that may involve adversarial or hostile situations. Exercise professional judgment in making decisions. Handle sensitive and confidential situations and documentation. Attend and conduct agency training and maintain necessary certifications and licenses. Maintain a Michigan drivers license and driving record that allows the operation of an agency or personal vehicle for agency business or to transport clients as needed.

IV. JOB SETTING

Work is performed in the SIL Cottage, outdoor environments, and offsite locations. Frequent travel may involve exposure to seasonal weather conditions, unsanitary conditions in homes, communicable diseases and unsafe environments. Duties may require contact with persons who are hostile or abusive, or with children who are upset and confused. Work may involve standing, walking, or running.
