Job Description

General Purpose of Job:

Compounds and dispenses medications accurately and according to established operations. Processes information and prepares retail prescriptions. The certified technician will assist the Pharmacists with various other related duties.

Description:

Essential Duties:

This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Associates may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.

  • Answers the telephone, receiving and relaying messages as needed.
  • Receives new and refill prescription orders and processes them in a timely manner.
  • Collects information needed to fill prescriptions and records information used in filling prescriptions.
  • Must abide by federal, state and local laws to collect and prepare patient information.
  • Enters data into computer considering patient safety and confidentiality.
  • Keeps all prescription forms after prescriptions are dispensed.
  • Assists pharmacist in safe preparation and delivery of IV’s and medications.
  • Follows pharmacist instructions and directives in performing daily duties.
  • Verifies all orders with the Pharmacist on duty and informs the Pharmacist of any medications that do not seem in line with the patient’s condition or previous medications.
  • Assists in maintaining a clean and safe work environment.
  • Assists pharmacist in preparing prescriptions by counting, packaging, pouring medications and labeling containers.
  • Orders medication from wholesaler or manufacturer; also orders ancillary pharmacy supplies.
  • Communicates with pharmacist regarding all prescriber and patient questions and medication warnings or interactions.
  • Receives, prices, and stocks all orders from wholesalers and manufacturer. Updates drug prices as needed.
  • Organizes outdated or overstocked medications to ship back to manufacturers for credit.
  • Helps maintain various daily logs according to JCAHO guidelines.
  • Checks crash carts, restocks Pyxis machines, and distributes medications to nursing units.
  • Mixes IV additive solutions and chemotherapy as required using aseptic technique.
  • Compounding of Non-Sterile medications up to and including Moderate Compounding as defined by USP<795> & Sterile Medications up to and including Medium Risk as defined by USP<797>, including Hazardous Drugs.
  • Compounding caregivers adhere to the prescription or medical order for the strength, quality and purity of compounding preparations. Compounded products are packaged, labeled and dispensed according to current laws & regulations.
Job Requirements

General Requirements:

  • Certified as a Pharmacy Technician (PTCB).
  • State of Michigan Pharmacy Technician License.

Work Experience:

  • Experience as a Pharmacy Technician, preferred.

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

  • Excellent oral & written communication skills.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Strong departmental team player.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to work well under pressure.
