Job Description
General Purpose of Job: The Patient Access Representative is responsible for creating a positive impression for each patient and family member. Accurately interviews and enters all Sparrow patients into the iSparrow (Epic) System. Assists with switchboard operations as well as directing patients and visitors to the appropriate department.
Essential Duties
- Interview patients for the purpose of collecting complete and accurate confidential demographic and financial information to comply with regulatory agencies and billing requirements.
- Perform pre-registration, verification of insurance, and collecting copayments/deductibles.
- Enter timely and accurate confidential patient information in compliance with hospital policies and Federal Regulations, such as HIPAA and EMTALA.
- Provide excellent customer service to patients and families with empathy.
- Assign appropriate ICD-10 codes for registration and billing compliance at scheduling and registration.
- Obtain signatures and information as required by regulatory agencies, ensuring compliance with HIPAA, EMTALA, and Identity Theft (Red Flag) reporting.
- Verify insurance eligibility and covered benefits via electronic systems or phone.
- Educate patients about their financial responsibilities and collect prepayments for services not covered by insurance, including co-pays, deductibles, or deposits.
- Operate multiple computer applications to register patients, schedule appointments, and retrieve surgical, testing, insurance, and financial information.
- Coordinate with other departments such as Surgery Scheduling, Central Scheduling, Patient Support Services, Pre-service, Patient Financial Services, and physician offices to obtain data or escalate issues.
- Work on exception accounts held internally or rejected by payers due to registration errors.
- Cross-train to support various Patient Access areas with minimal supervision.
- Support continuous improvement and lean initiatives in the department.
- Provide system support and education to other caregivers for applications used in patient access procedures.
- Assist with onboarding and training new staff.
- Screen patients and visitors for infectious diseases upon hospital entry.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
- Experience: Minimum of six months working with the public.
- Education: High School Diploma or GED.
- Skills: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, strict adherence to patient confidentiality, medical terminology knowledge preferred, ability to type 40 wpm preferred.
