Job summary

RailWorks Corporation in Farmingdale, NY is seeking a Signal System Estimator with extensive NYCT signaling experience to read contract documents, prepare detailed labor and material takeoffs, and generate accurate estimates.

Reporting to the Lead Estimator, the role requires in-office presence, field knowledge, and ability to coordinate with civil and track estimators on multiple projects. Salary ranges from $150,000 to $200,000 annually with overtime possibilities.

Qualifications

• Electrical Engineering degree is preferred.
• Ability to translate cable plans into detailed equipment lists (signal heads, switch machines, stop machines, axle counters, cases, etc.).
• Knowledge of Signal Rooms (Train Control Rooms, Relay Rooms) and associated equipment.
• Experience with Towers and Dispatchers Offices equipment and wiring.
• Able to determine working wire counts of multiple-strand signal cables.
• Experience with tie-ins between new and existing signal systems.
• Testing and In-Servicing (Commissioning) of signal systems including room and wayside equipment.
• Removal of decommissioned signal systems and cabling.
• 10 years’ experience in NYCT Signaling System and minimum 2 years in Signal Contracts.
• Must take NYCT work credential trainings (MTA track safety, OSHA 30).
• Three (3) years of recent related experience; railway or construction experience is a plus.

Compensation

Salary, Including Benefits: $150,000-$200,000 annually Salary is based on a 40-hour work week. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday (weekends if available)

Position Summary

The Signal System Estimator reads all applicable contract documents, including drawings and specifications, and creates an Excel spreadsheet listing work activities with associated labor and material units.

Reporting to the Lead Estimator, the Signal System Estimator must be present in the office daily. Remote work is not permitted. The Signal System Estimator must have at least 10 years’ experience working in the NYCT signal system in an engineering capacity and be familiar with the elements that comprise a signal system for conventional block signaling and CBTC. Must be available to work weekdays and weekends as required to support project schedules. Will work on multiple projects as required. Will attend related meetings and assist the project team with preparing takeoffs. This is an hourly rate position with the ability to work overtime as the contract requires.

Required Skills and Qualifications

• Electrical Engineering degree is preferred.
• The ability to translate cable plans into detailed equipment lists (signal heads, switch machines, stop machines, axle counters, cases, etc.)
• Signal Rooms, such as Train Control Rooms (TCR), Relay Rooms (RR), including all equipment (Racks, Cabinets, etc.), inter-rack wiring, and power loops.
• Towers and Dispatchers Offices, including all equipment (Control Panels, Workstations, etc.) and wiring, etc.
• Can determine working wire counts of multiple-strand signal cables.
• Tie-ins between new and existing signal systems
• Testing and In-Servicing (Commissioning) of the signal system. Inclusive of breakdown testing of room equipment, wayside equipment (signal heads, switch machines, stop machines, axle counters, cases). The in-servicing of the signal system.
• Removal of decommissioned signal systems, inclusive of equipment, raceways, and cabling.
• Request 10 years’ experience in NYCT Signaling System and a minimum of 2 years in Signal Contracts.
• Must take training courses for all NYCT work credentials, including MTA track safety and OSHA 30,
• Previous electronics training would be an asset
• Three (3) years of recent related experience. Railway or construction experience would be an asset

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Works in main office in Farmingdale, Long Island
• Visit field sites to understand the project’s needs
• Sits, reads, writes, and uses a keyboard
• May be exposed to harsh weather conditions including very hot and very cold weather
• May be exposed to loud noise.
