Job summary

RailWorks Corporation is seeking a Safety Coordinator to lead site safety communications and training across our transit rail projects. You will ensure regulatory compliance, manage incident reporting, and drive hazard mitigation with a focus on FRA and OSHA standards.

The role requires a hands-on safety professional who can train teams, conduct audits, and coordinate with regional and corporate safety leadership. Strong communication and multi-site coordination are essential.

Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years of safety experience in the construction industry.
• NYCT Track Safety trained.
• Active member of the American Society of Safety Professionals.
• Possess NYS DOL Asbestos Inspector License.
• 30-hour OSHA Construction Safety and Health (29 CFR 1926) course completed.

Responsibilities

• Conducts regular worksite surveillance inspections, air sampling tests and comprehensive safety training for employees.
• Documents unsafe conditions, safety violations, accidents and near misses.
• Investigates all surrounding circumstances with interviews and inspections to verify PPE and site gear.
• Determines safety needs and corrects unsafe activities ensuring records and reports are compliant.
• Implements safety policies in line with FRA/OSHA and customer requirements.
• Trains hourly labor, foremen, supervisors and managers in site safety practices.
• Inspects sites for hazards and follows up to ensure corrective measures are implemented.
• Leads investigations of near misses and incidents for legal and client use.
• Submits incident reports to regulators and keeps safety files up to date.
• Oversees Workers’ Compensation program administration on projects.
• Provides safety signage and barrier materials at sites.
• Assists with corporate safety management system as needed.

Compensation

$30 - $55 / hour

Position Summary

Safety is a core value at RailWorks. The Safety coordinator is the company’s first line for communications and training relating to our safety programs and for ensuring that the company fully complies with all respective local, state, and federal regulations and our customer’s requirements. The safety coordinator actively directs the administration of project safety, accident prevention, and hazard communication programs to maintain safe work environments.

Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties

• Conducts regular worksite surveillance inspections, air samplings tests and comprehensive safety training for employees
• Documents unsafe conditions, safety violations, accidents and near misses
• Thoroughly investigates all surrounding circumstances through employee interviews, equipment inspections and site inspections carefully reviewing the integrity of personal protective equipment, materials, and job-site specific gear
• Determines safety needs and corrects unsafe employee activities, procedures, and practices, ensures that all required records and reports are complete, accurate and correctly submitted to comply with all internal processes and comply with all local, state and federal regulations and customer requirements
• Plans and implements safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state and federal regulations with special emphasis on FRA and OSHA requirements, as well as customer requirements
• Trains and coaches hourly labor, foremen, supervisors and local managers in work site safety practices, fire prevention and correct handling techniques for toxins, equipment, and other materials
• Inspects the jobsite to detect existing or potential accident and health hazards, determining corrective or preventative measures where indicated, and follows up to ensure measures have been implemented
• Leads investigations of near misses and incidents and cooperates in the preparation of materials and evidence for organization use in hearings, lawsuits, and insurance investigations
• Submits incident reports complying with all local, state, and federal regulations, customer, and corporate requirements, maintains safety files and records
• Oversees administration related to the company’s Workers’ Compensation program on the specific project
• Provides informational signs, posters, barriers, and other materials to warn of potential and actual safety hazards and to prevent access to hazardous conditions
• Assists the Regional Safety Director and Corporate Safety Director as requested with the corporate safety management system.

Required Skills and Qualifications

• A minimum of 2 years of experience in safety positions in the construction industry
• NYCT Track Safety trained
• Minimum of 90 days prior NYCT Right of Way experience with flagging and diversions of service.
• 40-hour NYC-Dept. of Buildings Site Safety Manager Course.
• 30-hour OSHA Construction Safety and Health (29 CFR 1926) Course.
• Active member of American Society of Safety Professionals
• Possess and maintain a current NYS DOL Asbestos Inspector License
• Possess and maintain a current C-3/C-5 Supervisor/Competent Person Training for De-leading of Industrial Structures Certificate
• Shall receive a minimum of 6 hours of relevant safety training courses on a yearly basis for the duration of the Contract.
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to write reports
• Strong computer skills are mandatory, significant experience and abilities with Microsoft Office Suite are necessary
• Experience with OSHA reporting necessary
• Must have excellent communications skills, both verbal and written
• Strong interpersonal skills are necessary; ability to interact and with all levels of the company in field sites, corporate, and customers
• Must possess the character and unquestionable integrity to represent the Company and provide credibility for all work, reports and analysis that is provided through the safety department
• Must have the ability to grasp facts, processes, procedures in a changing environment very quickly, a quick learner
• Works in a proactive manner, a self-starter who approaches his/her work with a sense of urgency
• Ability to meet deadlines under pressure in short time frames
• Ability to multi-task and thrive in an environment where numerous tasks and projects are occurring simultaneously

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Must have a valid driving license with a clean driving record and ability to travel as required
• Must be physically able to wear respiratory protection, climb ladders, work in tunnels, work at heights, work outdoors in both hot and cold conditions and walk remote jobsites
• Must be able to obtain TWIC card for access to ports as well as pass other security screenings as determined by our clients.
