Job summary

Applied Research Laboratory at Penn State is seeking a Communications and Signal Processing Engineer to advance resilient systems for national security. You will develop, test, and prototype advanced algorithms and PHY waveforms, collaborating with ARL teams and sponsors to deliver mission-critical capabilities.

Candidates should have strong MATLAB/Python skills, experience in multidisciplinary environments, and the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly.

Qualifications

• Background in communications and signal processing (waveform design, detection/estimation, protocol development, channel modeling)
• MATLAB or Python experience for modeling, simulation and analysis
• Ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary, team oriented environments
• Strong written and verbal communication of technical concepts

Responsibilities

• Develop, test, and evaluate advanced signal processing algorithms and communication techniques
• Model and simulate communication system physical layer (PHY) protocols and waveforms
• Prototype communication capabilities using software defined radios (SDRs) and open source tools
• Contribute to waveform, modulation, and algorithm design for challenging channel environments
• Perform system level analysis, theoretical evaluation, and performance assessments
• Document findings, prepare recommendations, and present results to sponsors
• Participate in field tests, demonstrations, and stakeholder engagements
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across ARL and with government sponsors
