Job summary

CPKC is seeking qualified candidates for Signal & Communications roles in the U.S. and Wisconsin region. The position involves installation, repair, and maintenance of signals, crossing lights, and related equipment to ensure 24/7 railway operations and FRA-regulated safety.

Ideal candidates have 3+ years in S&C maintenance, a high school diploma, and a certified railroad signal training program. CDL is preferred; flexible shifts include nights and weekends.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalency.
  • Must be 18+ and have a valid driver's license; CDL preferred.
  • 3+ years' hands-on S&C maintenance and renewal experience with signaling systems.
  • Completion of a certified railroad signal training program before hire.
  • Certifications in CPKC safety rules and medical card.
  • Flexible and dependable, able to work nights, weekends, and holidays in any weather.
  • Strong safety focus and adherence to protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Dig, cable repair, assemble and install signal equipment, pole line work
  • Repair/replace damaged equipment; test S&C systems
  • Perform preventive maintenance on S&C apparatus
  • Perform inspections and testing as required on each device
  • Report problems or unsafe conditions
  • Ensure materials on hand to avoid delays
  • Make authorized corrections and modifications
  • Align with regulatory rules and policies for safety and excellence
  • Other duties: cable locates, painting, housekeeping, climbing ladders

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

CPKC is dedicated to ensuring uninterrupted, year-round railway operations, functioning 24/7 to maintain excellence in the Engineering Operations domain. A vital component of this effort lies with the Signal and Communications (S&C) team, whose expertise ensures the safety and reliability of our signal systems through rigorous Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulatory tests and inspections. S&C personnel play a critical role in the installation, repair, and maintenance of essential equipment, including signals, crossing lights, switch machines, and other vital infrastructure. Depending on experience, individuals may hold positions ranging from Assistant Signalman, Signalman or Qualified Signal Maintainer.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Dig, cable repair, assemble and install signal equipment, pole line work
  • Repair and/or replace damaged equipment, test and verify accurate operation of S&C systems and equipment
  • Perform preventive maintenance on all S&C apparatus
  • Perform inspections and testing as required on each device
  • Report problems; failures or unsafe conditions
  • Ensure there is enough material on hand to permit work or repairs to be completed without undue delay
  • Make authorized corrections and modifications
  • Align with company regulatory rules and policies to uphold safety and operational excellence
  • Other general duties can include cable locates, painting, and housekeeping of signal housing & equipment and climbing ladders
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
  • High school diploma or equivalency
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Valid driver’s license to operate company vehicle; commercial driver’s license is preferred
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in S&C maintenance and renewal, demonstrating proven expertise in signaling systems from the railroad or similar industries
  • Successful candidate will have to show completion of a certified railroad signal training program before being hired.
  • Acquire certifications in CPKC’s safety rules and medical card
  • Flexible and dependable, able to work a variety of shifts—including nights, weekends, and holidays in any weather, while consistently delivering strong performance both independently and as part of a team
  • Strong communication skills, with a proven ability to deliver clear instructions and foster effective teamwork
  • Demonstrate strong safety focus by following protocols and prioritizing team health and safety

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
