Job summary

Whitfield County is seeking a skilled worker to install, maintain, and repair roadway signs, pavement markings, and traffic-control devices across county roads and facilities.

You will assist in snow removal operations and support the Public Works crew while following MUTCD standards and safety guidelines.

Job description

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

This classification is responsible for performing skilled work involving the installation, maintenance, repair, and replacement of roadway signs, pavement markings/striping, traffic-control devices, and related Public Works infrastructure. This position is responsible for maintaining safe, visible, and properly placed traffic-control markings and signage throughout the County.

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

• Assists with the fabrication, maintenance and installation of road and street signs, and other traffic control devices.
• Assists with maintenance and repair of electronic traffic signals.
• Assists with the sign maintenance and management program.
• Assists road department work crews with the setting up of work zone traffic controls in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
• Assists with coordinating and performing various maintenance duties as it relates to the public works department.
• Assists in utility locating and relocating.
• Assists in gathering project specific information.
• Assists in roadway striping and pavement marking on County maintained roads, parking areas, intersections, and other locations.
• Must be available to assist on-call personnel.
• Flags traffic.
• Assists with snow removal operations.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

• Knowledge of the geography of the county, including roads and landmarks.
• Knowledge of department safety guidelines.
• Knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
• Knowledge of mathematics.
• Skill in the operation of heavy equipment.
• Skill in the use of GPS equipment and software.
• Skill in the use of computers and job-related software programs.
• Skill in communicating effectively with the general public.
• Skill in research and in preparing reports.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

The employee works independently and as a member of a Public Works crew and may be assigned to other departmental operations as needed to support County priorities and emergency or special projects.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• High School Diploma or GED. Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with this the completion of high school or equivalent. Knowledge of computer applications including Microsoft Office
• Ability to understand construction plans and GDOT specifications.
• Ability to read and calculate a tape measure and other measuring devices.
• Possession of a valid Driver’s License. Applicant must be able to obtain CDL license within 1 year.
