Role Description

This is a full-time, on-site Sign Language Interpreter role based at school locations in Belmont, WV. The Sign Language Interpreter provides real-time interpretation between spoken English and sign language for students who are deaf or hard of hearing in classrooms, school activities, and meetings. Daily responsibilities include interpreting classroom instruction, discussions, and announcements, as well as facilitating communication between students, teachers, and staff. The role also involves preparing for classes by reviewing lesson plans, collaborating with educators to understand instructional goals, and maintaining professional boundaries and confidentiality. The interpreter supports an inclusive learning environment, follows district policies and ethical standards, and participates in relevant training and professional development.

Qualifications
  • Candidates should possess strong skills in Sign Language and Interpreting to accurately convey classroom content and communication.
  • Candidates should possess skills in Translation and Deaf Culture to ensure culturally appropriate and clear communication.
  • Candidates should possess excellent Communication skills to collaborate effectively with students, educators, families, and staff.
  • Relevant certifications or licensure in sign language interpreting (e.g., state interpreter certification, RID credentials) preferred or required per state and district guidelines.
  • Experience interpreting in educational settings, especially K–12 environments, is highly beneficial.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, adhere to professional and ethical standards, and follow school district policies.
  • Strong organizational skills, reliability in attendance, and the ability to adapt to different classroom formats and student needs.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; additional training or a degree in interpreting, education, or a related field is beneficial.
