Job summary

Thornapple Manor in Hastings, MI is seeking a Shuttle Bus Driver to transport residents to appointments and outings. You will ensure the shuttle is clean, safe, and well-maintained, serving as a courteous ambassador for the facility.

The role requires inspecting the vehicle, following all safety regulations, and maintaining a helpful, professional demeanor with residents and staff. This is a per diem/on-call position with hourly pay.

Qualifications

  • Must possess a valid Michigan chauffeur license and a clean driving record.
  • Two to five years of experience in this type of position preferred.
  • CPR and First Aid certification required.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English; communicate with staff and residents.

Responsibilities

  • Operate the shuttle bus safely and maintain cleanliness and interior safety.
  • Inspect the bus before/after each shift and complete the Vehicle Inspection Log.
  • Assist residents with transportation to appointments, field trips, and outings.
  • Be punctual, follow the schedule, and provide information to guests and staff.

POSITION: Shuttle Bus Driver

SUPERVISOR: Facility Services Director

JOB SUMMARY:

The driver will ensure that the shuttle bus is clean and maintained in good condition in order to transport Thornapple Manor’s residents to and from appointments as well as field trips and/or special outings as required by management. The driver will act as a good will ambassador and maintain high safety standards at all times. Job responsibilities will be performed in accordance with all company standards, policies, and procedures.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Responsible for practicing, supporting, and promoting the company’s Service Standards at all times.
  • Drivers will inspect the bus prior to/after each shift, and properly fill out the Vehicle Inspection Log.
  • Drivers will be familiar with the operation of the vehicle and lift thoroughly before operating it.
  • Drivers will ensure that the shuttle bus is clean and that the interior is safe and ready for use prior to starting the shift.
  • Drivers will obey all driving regulations and will adhere to all laws on the company’s properties as well as public/private property.
  • Drivers will maintain jurisdiction over anyone who may interfere with the driver’s ability to operate the vehicle safely.
  • Drivers will consider all road hazards and will operate the vehicle with full coherency and alertness at all times.
  • Drivers will never drink any alcoholic beverages during any period of time which may affect the driver’s ability to operate the bus, nor will a driver be under the influence of any substance that may affect the driver’s ability to drive safely.
  • Drivers will be knowledgeable with regard to directions and the company’s information and will offer information and assistance to our guests.
  • Drivers will act in a courteous manner toward staff members, residents, and guests at all times.
  • Drivers will be punctual in following the schedule as specified to ensure guests are not left waiting. All drivers must be at their bus at least 5 minutes before scheduled departure.
  • Drivers will try to make an additional run when our shuttles are full and other guests are left behind.
  • Drivers will not leave their bus unattended with the engine running or not while passengers are aboard.
  • This position is not limited to the duties listed in this job description. Duties and responsibilities can be changed, expanded, reduced, or deleted by management to meet business needs of Thornapple Manor.
Residents Rights:
  • Maintain the confidentiality of resident information.
  • Knock before entering a resident’s room.
  • Honor the residents’ personal and property rights.
  • Inform resident when it is necessary to move his/her personal possessions.
Miscellaneous:
  • Turn in all found articles to your supervisor.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Is involved with residents, personnel, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc., under all conditions and circumstances.
  • Is subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, personnel and visitors.
  • Works beyond normal working hours and on weekends and holidays when necessary, as well as in other positions as needed.
  • Is subject to call-back during emergency conditions (e.g. severe weather, evacuation, post-disaster, etc.)
  • May be required to work on shifts other than the one for which hired.
  • Attends and participates in continuing educational programs.
  • Is subject to injury from falls, burns from equipment, odors, etc., throughout the work day, as well as to reactions from dust, disinfectants, tobacco smoke, and other air contaminants.
  • Is subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including TB and the AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses.
  • May be subject to handling of and exposure to hazardous chemicals.
  • May be required to work in cramped spaces and in adverse weather conditions.
  • Sitting, standing, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, and moving intermittently during working hours.
  • Required to be on-call on a regular basis.
SKILLS, EXPERIENCE, AND EDUCATION REQUIRED:
  • Must possess, as a minimum, a high school degree or equivalent.
  • Two to five (2-5) years of experience in this type of position preferred.
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively with staff members, residents, guest and Management in both written and verbal form.
  • Must have a valid Chauffeurs license for the State of Michigan and a clean driving record.
  • Must be CPR and First Aide Certified.
SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language.
  • Must be a minimum age of 18 years old.
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions, to follow instructions, and to accept constructive criticism.
  • Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public.
  • Must maintain the care and use of supplies, equipment, etc., and maintain the appearance of transportation device.
  • Must be willing to work harmoniously with other personnel as well as be willing to handle residents based on whatever maturity level they’re currently functioning.
  • Must possess the ability to minimize waste of supplies and misuse of equipment.
  • Must possess the ability to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing maintenance practices.
  • Must be able to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Must be able to relate information concerning a resident’s condition.
  • Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

(With or w/out the use of mechanical devices)

  • Must be able to move intermittently throughout the work day.
  • Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
  • Must possess sight/hearing senses or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately.
  • Must function independently and have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with the residents/personnel.
  • Must meet the general health requirements set forth by the policies of this facility which include a medical and physical examination.
  • Must be able to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at times hostile people within the facility.
  • Must be able to push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of 50 pounds to a minimum height of 4 feet and be able to push, pull, move, and/or carry such weight a minimum distance of 30 feet.
  • May be necessary to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.
  • Requires normal, corrective vision range and the ability to distinguish letters, numbers and symbols.
  • Manual dexterity to operate job related equipment.
