Job Description

JOB TITLE: SHT Mechanic

REPORTS TO: Superintendent

Summary

Responsible for removal and installation of hull treatment and non-metallic coatings on U.S. Navy nuclear submarines. Requires willingness to learn, dependability, and critical thinking skills.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ensure safety and quality standards are met.
  • Perform carpentry duties using manual and power tools, and build containments.
  • Read and interpret manuals, safety rules, and procedures.
  • Prepare molds and templates for hull treatment fabrication.
  • Maintain a clean work environment.
  • Understand complex shapes and symmetrical gaps relative to ship surfaces.
  • Mix solvents and adhesives, use troweling tools and hull treatment equipment.
  • Follow all company policies and pay close attention to detail.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
  • Willing to comply with respirator standards and pass background checks.

Preferred Experience

  • Commercial carpentry
  • Ceramic or composite tile installation
  • Shipyard, manufacturing, or industrial experience

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to measure and identify materials.
  • Basic calculation skills.
  • Follow instructions in various formats.
  • Problem-solving, organizing, and prioritizing skills.
  • Work independently and efficiently.

Working Conditions

  • Exposure to extreme temperatures, noise, chemicals, fumes, airborne particles, weather, dust, humidity, machinery, confined spaces, and proximity to others. Safety gear is mandatory.
  • Physical activity includes walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, balancing, crawling, sitting, reaching, gripping, lifting (up to 50 pounds), and visual requirements.
  • Shift work, travel, and mandatory overtime are expected.
