Job description

Job Summary

Cox Fleet is hiring a Shop Trailer Mechanic I – a dedicated on‑site shop position focused on DOT inspections, preventative maintenance, light repairs, and other duties such as trailer brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps, liftgates, and brake chambers. The role does not include emergency roadside repairs.

Duties
  • Follow safe operating practices and procedures.
  • Determine parts needed for each job and purchase them from the Shop Parts Department.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment and assist in end‑of‑day cleanup.
  • Apply acquired knowledge and experience to perform job tasks and evaluate technical information.
  • Work with Service Writer to assess customer needs and resolve issues.
  • Manage concurrent tasks, prioritizing activities and time allocations.
  • Act with integrity, demonstrate honesty, keep commitments, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance (PM), DOT inspections, and follow‑up repairs on light, medium, and heavy‑duty vehicles.
  • Perform routine maintenance such as oil changes, battery checks, and lubricating equipment.
  • Use hand tools, precision instruments, trailer tools, welding equipment, lifts, and jacks.
  • Document work by uploading pictures and completing forms on Repair Orders using company devices or the Karmak application.
  • Complete DOT and other regulatory forms timely.
  • Maintain productivity and meet standard repair times.
  • Communicate with Shop Manager and support team for repair estimates, purchase orders, and RO findings.
  • Work in compliance with safety, health, environmental policies, and federal regulations (OSHA, EPA, DOT).
  • Participate in all required safety training.
  • Maintain assigned service trucks and perform safety checks and pre/post‑trip inspections.
  • Adjust and repair trailer equipment and systems, including brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps, engines, liftgates, brake chambers, and steering systems.
  • Adhere to company policies, processes, and procedures.
Requirements
  • High school diploma/GED and up to 2 years of related experience.
  • Own a set of hand tools necessary for the job duties.
  • OEM training and certifications are preferred.
  • Complete all company required training.
  • Pass DOT‑regulated pre‑employment background screening and DOT physical.
  • Provide a current, valid DOT medical card with at least four months remaining; if less, a DOT physical is required.
  • Hold a valid state driver’s license and maintain a Driver Qualification File.
  • Possess a clean driving record and meet a 3‑year motor vehicle record review requirement.
Required Certifications
  • ASE T8 (PMI) within 18 months of hire.
Preferred Certifications
  • ASE 608/609

  • Knowledge of trailer parts and systems, including design, use, repair, and maintenance.
  • Ability to interpret and apply new information for problem‑solving and decision‑making.
  • Physical stamina: ability to lift, bend, climb, stand, and walk for long periods; perform moderately heavy labor.
  • Capacity to endure repetitive tasks without fatigue.

  • Effective interpersonal communication and teamwork.
  • Surety in selecting appropriate tools and equipment.
