HOLT CAT is seeking an engine shop mechanic to inspect, diagnose, and repair diesel- or natural gas-powered industrial engines and related components. The role supports customer needs and departmental goals while often leading or collaborating with a team.

The position requires seven+ years of experience, schematics literacy, and a high school diploma or diesel program. Onsite work in Irving, TX with overtime as needed and ongoing training opportunities.

Qualifications

  • Seven or more years of diesel-powered or natural gas powered engines - experience preferred.
  • Ability and knowledge to read/use schematics and diagrams - experience preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Graduation from a diesel technology program preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Models, promotes, reinforces, and rewards the consistent use of HOLT's Values Based Leadership (VBL) tools, models, and processes to ensure alignment with our Vision, Values, and Mission
  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses equipment malfunctions and failures
  • Disassembles and assembles of machine components to manufacturer's specifications through the use of hand tools, pneumatic tools, and any specialized tooling
  • Rebuilds, repairs, reconditions, and maintains equipment and components
  • Demonstrates good customer relations and support; communicates customer needs to shop management
  • Plans and controls cost of repair jobs
  • Completes parts orders and identifies parts for return
  • Provides a significant amount of task and behavior-oriented mentoring, and training to others
  • Maintains all equipment and work areas - keeps in good, clean, and orderly condition
  • Completes all documents associated with repairs in a timely manner
  • Works safely at all times and adheres to all applicable safety policies; complies with all company policies, procedures, and standards
  • Works overtime as required by workload and customers' needs
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; e.g., ProTech Technician Training Paths
  • Requires regular and punctual employee attendance

Job description

This engine shop mechanic position is responsible for performing inspections, diagnoses, and repairs of diesel-powered or natural gas powered industrial engines and/or related equipment or components, following established procedures and guidelines. Frequently works independently or as a leader/member of a team to provide mechanical services that satisfies customer needs and achieves departmental goals.

Mid-level position - Generally has more than seven years of experience and/or demonstrated job relevant knowledge/skills. A Level 4 Technician has a broad knowledge of the field's standard and technical concepts, practices, and procedures. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of standard, complex, and technical tasks; is self-starting and requires minimal supervision; is often a team member on a large project.

Essential Functions

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Extensive knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance
  • Knowledge of industrial engines powered by diesel or natural gas and related components such as turbos, and transmissions
  • Demonstrates proficiency with current computer software, related hardware, and machine electronic systems
  • Quality control analysis skills - Conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance and communicate findings
  • Operation and control skills - Controlling operations of equipment or systems
  • Equipment selection skills - Determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job
  • Ability to operate a conventional forklift and an overhead crane
  • The ability to quickly and repeatedly operate the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions
  • Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, and equipment used in mechanical repair
  • The ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects
  • The ability to read, write, and understand information
  • The ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences
  • Must have/acquire basic mechanic hand and pneumatic tools (metric/standard)

  • Must be able to move objects, and use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue
  • Frequently moves materials or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds

  • Ascends/descends with gradual or continuous progress by oneself, using both hands and feet and climbs up and down ladders and/or equipment
  • Be able to maneuver safely and work underneath equipment
  • Routinely reacts to visual, auditory, and other signals, including alarms and instructions, and is required to visually inspect work
Work Environment
  • Regularly works indoors around moving mechanical parts
  • May be exposed to weather extremes when working outside in conditions that include inclement weather, heat, cold, and humidity
  • Noise level may be loud at times
  • Exposure to small quantities of chemicals, dust, steam, high-pressure water, and high speed rotating equipment
  • Requires wearing common protective or safety equipment
  • Required to perform work in cramped spaces and/or high places
