Primary Purpose

Perform major and minor mechanical repairs with minimum supervision to ensure proper performance and safety of district vehicles. Perform assigned work following established policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Education/Certification:

  • High school graduate or GED
  • Must hold or obtain Valid Class B - CDL Drivers' License with "P" and "S" endorsements
  • Must obtain a vehicle inspector license within 3 months of employment preferred

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Must have knowledge of diesel and gasoline engine maintenance and repair
  • Must demonstrate proficiency as expert mechanic
  • Must furnish own tools
  • Must be cooperative and show initiative toward improving skills
  • Must be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Able to pass US Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical exam
  • Able to access and use printed service materials
  • Able to communicate effectively with others
Experience
  • Three (3) years' experience as a mechanic working on trucks or buses preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties

Maintenance and Repair

  • Perform major and minor mechanical repairs, preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and inspections on district vehicles in a timely and efficient manner as assigned by supervisor.
  • Service vehicles according to established preventive maintenance schedule and maintain accurate, updated records of all work performed.
  • Inspect vehicles and evaluate condition of systems, equipment, accessories, and lights; service as needed with minimum supervision.
  • Keep accurate records on all work performed.
  • Take necessary steps to improve skills as a mechanic by attending assigned classes and workshops.
  • Assist Mechanic I and II to become proficient in more difficult procedures through example, explanation and guidance.
  • Maintain a clean shop.
  • Maintain accurate records of time and materials required to perform repairs and service.

Safety

  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing. Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
  • Keep shop, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition and perform preventive maintenance on shop equipment according to established schedules.

Other

  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
  • Operate buses and other vehicles as needed.
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Maintain an appropriate level of technology competence to meet the current and future needs of Alief.
  • Implement alternative methods of instruction as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of Manual Trades - Maintenance Personnel.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment, including computer and peripherals; district vehicle

Posture: Prolonged standing, kneeling/squatting bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting; may work in tiring and uncomfortable positions over, in and under vehicles

Motion: Frequent walking, climbing stairs/ladders/scaffolding; regular grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching; frequent quick movements in small areas

Lifting: Frequent heavy lifting and carrying up to 90 pounds on a daily basis

Environment: Work outside and inside, on slippery, hard or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, noise, vibration; exposure to chemical and electrical hazards; work around machinery with moving parts; regularly work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
