Job summary

gpac is seeking a Shop Manager for a steel fabrication and welding shop in Durham, NC. You will lead day-to-day operations, weld and fabricate structural steel, and manage a shop crew while ensuring safety and high-quality work.

The role requires hands-on leadership and the ability to train and oversee shop employees. The ideal candidate has strong MIG/STICK welding skills, experience reading plans, and proven leadership in a shop environment.

Qualifications

• Ability to read and understand shop plans and the steel fabrication process.
• Experience leading and managing a team in a shop setting.
• Strong MIG and Stick welding skills with fabrication experience.
• Experience with torch cutting and saw cutting.

Responsibilities

• Weld and fabricate structural steel from shop plans and drawings.
• Manage, lead, and delegate work to shop employees.
• Assess the skill levels of new employees and communicate findings to management.
• Inspect welds and fabricated work to ensure quality and accuracy.
• Ensure employees are working safely and using the proper PPE.
• Maintain inventory and stock of welding supplies and fabrication materials.
• Monitor material needs and communicate when supplies need to be reordered.
• Open and close the welding shop on a daily basis.
• Help maintain an organized, productive, and safe shop environment.
• Lead by example and assist with welding and fabrication work as needed.

About The Opportunity

We are seeking a Shop Manager to lead day-to-day operations in a steel fabrication and welding shop. This is a hands-on leadership position for an experienced welder/fabricator who can read plans, fabricate steel, manage a shop crew, and ensure work is completed safely and to quality standards. The ideal candidate is a strong leader who can both work alongside the team and effectively delegate, train, and oversee shop employees.

Responsibilities

• Weld and fabricate structural steel from shop plans and drawings.

• Good communication and organizational skills.

Nice to Have

• Prior experience leading a welding or fabrication shop crew.
• Forklift certification.
• AWS certification.
• Bilingual in English and Spanish.

Compensation & Benefits

• $60,000-$75,000/year, depending on experience
• SEP IRA - Company contributes 4% of annual salary
