Job summary

Steel Tool & Engineering Co. in Trenton, MI is seeking a hands-on Manufacturing Shift Leader to keep production flowing on a 6:00am–4:30pm shift. This role is full-time and hourly, focused on leading operators, balancing schedules, and maintaining safety and quality on the shop floor.

You will review daily plans, assign work, monitor machine status and tooling, coach teammates, and escalate issues quickly. The ideal candidate brings 2+ years in manufacturing and a solid Lean background; lifting

Qualifications

• 2+ years of manufacturing experience (steel, machining, tooling, or related).
• Previous leadership/lead-operator background strongly preferred.
• Lean know-how: 5S, standard work, waste reduction.
• Comfortable on the shop floor; able to lift 40 lbs.
• Basic computer skills for production reporting, email, and ERP entry.

Responsibilities

• Own the daily plan: review schedules, staffing, machine status, materials, and tooling.
• Kick off with a sharp huddle—safety reminders, targets, quality expectations, and known risks.
• Place operators at the right stations; set priorities and verify standard work.
• Walk the floor to monitor output, scrap, downtime, and quality throughout the day.
• Provide on-the-spot coaching and training; lend hands-on support as needed.
• Fix minor issues immediately (5S, documentation, non‑critical quality/equipment items).
• Escalate critical events fast: safety risks, customer‑impacting defects, equipment failures.
• Communicate clearly with Quality, Maintenance, and Supervisors.
• Protect the team: enforce PPE, safety rules, and company policies without exception.
• Close the loop: compare results to targets; document downtime, quality, and safety concerns; brief the next shift/supervisor.
• Improve daily: identify at least one opportunity per shift and support Kaizen, A3s, and SMART goals via our 3‑Step Daily Leadership Process.
