Job Description

OPEN ROOT TEST

  • Must pass all three (3) positions - Vertical, Horizontal, and Overhead - flux core and stick
  • Ability to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card

Required to complete an open-root weld test on a 3/8" plate with a 1/8" gap for both SMAW (1/8" 7018 rods) and FCAW (flux-core) processes. Examples of acceptable welds are provided. Instructions are outlined below.

Equipment needed: Chipping Hammer, Gloves, Grinder, Hood, Safety Glasses, Steel-toed Boots, Welding Stinger, Wire Brush, Wire Pliers. Non-flammable upper body attire is required.

Step 1:
  • Prepare coupons by wire wheeling rust or mill scale; no grinding required. Set up coupons in jig with a 1/8" gap. Tack weld backing tabs onto each end.
Step 2:
  • Apply weldment to backing tabs on the backside to prevent separation. Place four tack welds per coupon in specified areas.
Step 3:
  • Mount coupons to test jig. Do not tack using jig's nut and bolt. Administer tests one at a time in different positions. Do not remove coupons until instructed.
Step 4:
  • Begin test, run root pass, and stop for inspection. Maintain a continuous weld puddle without whipping or popping the gun. Failures due to whipping or popping will result in test failure.
Step 5:
  • Complete filler and cap passes, leaving a 1/16" tolerance. Notify administrator when finished.
Step 6:
  • Back-gouge test plates, then remount and inspect. Passing is mandatory.
Step 7:
  • Clean slag, remount coupons, and prepare for final inspection.
