Job summary

Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, is seeking an Outside Machinist to install, groom and test major mechanical components on commercial or naval ships in various construction stages. The role includes working with steam turbines, gears, reactors, catapults and related systems.

Candidates must have 3+ years in automotive, diesel, heavy equipment, HVAC or shop maintenance as a machinist or similar. Overtime, outdoor work, and height access are expected.

Qualifications

• Must be able to take measurements or be willing to learn.
• Must be willing to undergo a background investigation and drug screen.
• Must be able to pass physical agility test.
• Must be able to lift at least 40 pounds.
• Must be able to work overtime as needed.
• Must be able to work outdoors year-round, in all weather conditions.

Responsibilities

• Install, groom and test the ship’s major mechanical components and systems.
• Work on commercial or naval ships in various stages of construction, overhaul or repair.
• Operate and maintain a range of shop tools and precision equipment.
• Perform overhead work and work at extreme heights as required.
