Qualifications

  • Five years’ experience in ship/boat maintenance, preservation or restoration.
  • High level of skill in maintenance and restoration of watercraft.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and weekends on a rotational basis.
  • Ability to record, log and document work performed clearly and accurately.
  • Ability to work unsupervised on assigned tasks and projects.
  • Completion of high school or college degree desirable.

Job Overview

Position Summary

The primary focus of work is Ship and Boat Carpentry related to the maintenance, preservation, and restoration of historic wooden vessels in New York City.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities


  • Proficient in Maintenance and Restoration tasks related to watercraft preservation

  • High level of proficiency in heavy timber ship carpentry and joinery

  • Experience and ability to caulk and paint vessels in a traditional manner

  • Ability and desire toteach and pass on skills to others through a variety of methods


Minimum Qualifications


  • Minimum of five years’ experience in a variety of ship and boat maintenance, preservation or restoration projects. Time spent in formal Boat Building Programs may replace up to three years’ experience

  • Possess a high degree of skill within the above areas of responsibility

  • Willingness to work flexible hours in performance of responsibilities

  • Willingness to work weekends on a rotational basis

  • Willingness and ability to work with non-professional shipyard volunteers

  • Ability and willingness to record, log and document work performed

  • Ability to work unsupervised on assigned tasks and projects

  • Possess a high degree of flexibility regarding scheduling of projects, tasks and responsibilities

  • Hold a valid driver’s license

  • Ability in the operation of forklifts and manlifts

  • Completion of high school or college degree program desirable
