Description
The Shipping Supervisor plays a critical role in the supply chain process by overseeing the people, processes, and systems responsible for the timely and accurate shipment of goods. This position is accountable for achieving productivity and operational targets throughout the assigned shift while maintaining an efficient workflow and high level of service.
The Shipping Supervisor is also responsible for ensuring compliance with workplace health and safety standards and maintaining the security of the facility, inventory, and equipment.
Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities:
- Oversee the hiring, training, development, scheduling, performance, and day-to-day activities of shipping staff.
- Ensure adequate staffing and warehouse coverage during normal hours of operation.
- Coordinate the effective use of automated and manual processes, systems, and material-handling equipment.
- Lead, motivate, and encourage teamwork to ensure productivity and operational targets are consistently met or exceeded.
- Communicate company policies, values, and vision to employees and ensure daily activities and decisions align with organizational goals.
- Conduct team meetings as needed to communicate priorities, provide updates, address issues, and reinforce expectations.
- Provide coaching and performance feedback to support employee development and accountability.
- Serve as a liaison between warehouse operations and transportation providers to support timely and accurate shipments.
- Coordinate and monitor the consolidation, preparation, and shipment of goods.
- Perform hands-on work in shipping and order-consolidation activities as needed.
- Ensure material-handling equipment is properly maintained, stored, and operated in accordance with company and safety requirements.
- Maintain high standards of workplace health, safety, hygiene, and security.
- Monitor operations to ensure productivity and service objectives are achieved.
- Identify operational issues and implement appropriate solutions to maintain an efficient flow of work.
- Manage and maintain appropriate inventory levels of shipping supplies.
- Monitor the cleanliness, organization, and overall upkeep of the shipping area.
- Cross-train in the supervision of other warehouse areas to provide operational coverage and backup support as needed.
- Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a warehouse or distribution environment.
- Minimum of 3 years of team leadership or supervisory experience.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and develop employees.
- Strong delegation and interpersonal skills, with the ability to clearly communicate expectations and explain processes.
- Effective planning and organizational skills, with the ability to manage the flow of orders and competing priorities.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, under pressure, and meet tight deadlines.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with warehouse personnel, transportation providers, and other internal teams.
