Job summary

Thorlabs in Newton, NJ is seeking a seasonal Warehouse Associate to pick/pack orders, verify shipments, and manage labeling and packing for timely delivery. You will work with the D365 WMS, use scanners, and ensure compliance with sales instructions and safety rules.

The role requires at least 1 year of warehouse experience, a HS diploma, and familiarity with Outlook/Excel and shipping software. Candidates must adapt to shifting tasks to meet carrier cutoffs and assist other warehouse functions

Qualifications

• Minimum 1 year of warehouse experience; inventory control experience is a plus.
• High School Diploma or equivalent or equivalent work experience.
• Familiarity with Outlook, Excel, shipping software or WMS; strong attention to detail.

Responsibilities

• Pick and pack orders accurately using handheld scanners and AS/RS systems.
• Verify outgoing shipments against sales orders and invoices in real time.
• Process WMS transactions to maintain inventory accuracy and tracking.
• Apply proper labels, postage, and shipping charges.
• Select packaging to ensure damage-free delivery and verify carrier service levels.
• Prepare basic international shipping documents when required.
• Escalate delays or unclear instructions to prevent customer impact.
• Maintain a clean, safe work area and follow PPE procedures.
• Assist cross-training in receiving and inventory control as needed.
• Meet carrier cutoff times and ensure same-day shipments where possible.

This position is seasonal up to six months

Purpose of the Position

The position is responsible for ensuring packages are shipped on time and in accordance with sales order instructions so customers will receive products in the same condition that products were sent using shipping software, scanners, label printers, scales and other equipment. Works under general supervision. Although the location of the position is in Newton, NJ, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other Thorlabs locations.

Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:

• Pick and pack customer orders accurately and efficiently according to printed work instructions while using handheld scanners and/or the automated storage and retrieval system.
• Verify outgoing shipments by comparing identifying information, counting and weighing items, and checking against sales orders, invoices, or other records using the D365 Warehouse Management System.
• Perform required WMS (D365) transactions in real time to ensure inventory accuracy and proper order tracking.
• Apply the correct carrier labels, postage, and required shipping charges to all outgoing packages.
• Select appropriate packaging materials to protect products and ensure damage-free delivery to the customer.
• Confirm correct carriers and shipping service level (Ground, Next Day Air, 2nd Day, International, etc.) based on sales order requirements.
• Prepare basic commercial shipping documents for international shipments when required (packing slips, invoices, etc.).
• Escalate shipment delays, missing inventory, or unclear shipping instructions to the lead or supervisor to avoid customer impact.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, and follow all safety procedures including proper lifting techniques and use of PPE.
• Participate in cross-training within other warehouse functions (receiving, inventory control) to build flexibility and support team needs.
• Monitor daily work volume with Q controller and adjust priorities to meet carrier cutoff times and ensure all same-day shipments are completed on time.
• Assist inventory and receiving teams when needed to support overall warehouse operations and business continuity.

• Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work-related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures.
• Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments.

Physical Activities:

Work may be active, could stand for long durations and/or perform repetitious work at times. Typical activities can include but not limited to walking, climbing stairs and/or ladders, twisting, turning, bending, reaching, reaching, reaching above the shoulders, and stooping. The employee may lift or move objects up to 50 pounds. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, however, may be noisy at times.

Qualifications

Experience:

• Minimum 1 year of warehouse experience with previous warehouse and/or inventory control experience is a plus

Education:

• High School Diploma or equivalent or equivalent work experience

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

• Familiarity with a variety of computer software applications including Microsoft Outlook and Excel, and experience with shipping software or Warehouse Management Systems.
• Strong attention to detail Strong ability to work well in a group atmosphere and comply with high quality standards.
• Strong ability to shift from one task to another to address changing priorities within the business unit, including carrier cut-off times and pickup schedule.

The hourly rate for this position is $19.36
