Job Description

Job Title: Structural Shipfitter

Reports To: Structural Superintendent

The role involves fabricating, assembling, and erecting steel structures, including reading drawings, removing and reinstalling steel structures on ships, with knowledge of technical standards including 1689 and 1688.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Ensure safety and quality compliance in all work.
  • Bring personal basic tools and equipment unless provided by the workplace.
  • Lay out, fabricate, and brace metal structural components.
  • Read blueprints and templates to position parts accurately.
  • Mark reference lines and position parts within ship hulls.
  • Align, fasten, and prepare components for welding.
  • Install structural accessories and prepare molds or templates for nonstandard parts.
  • Perform shaping and cutting of heavy metal parts using shop machinery.
  • Assemble components as directed, maintain organized workspaces, and follow company policies.
  • Work collaboratively to maximize productivity and efficiency.
  • Prepare products for shipment and report unsafe conditions.
  • Lift materials manually or with equipment, up to 60 pounds.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to interpret written, oral, and visual instructions.
  • Familiarity with the metric system and basic shop math.
  • Physical ability to stand long periods and work in confined spaces.
  • Knowledge of tools, blueprints, and measurement devices.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Six months to one year of related experience, especially with steel, aluminum, or stainless steel.
Working Conditions
  • Work primarily onboard ships, in dry docks, or shipyards, often requiring overtime.
  • Exposure to extreme temperatures, chemicals, noise, and dust.
  • Work in confined spaces, on scaffolds, and ladders, with safety gear required.

  • Various hand tools, power tools, and heavy machinery including welders, cranes, and cutting equipment.
