Job summary

IMIA, LLC is seeking a Fabricator to join our shipyard and customer facilities team. The position focuses on fabrication, assembly, and erection of steel structures, requiring blueprint reading and experience with 1689/1688 technical standards.

You will weld with SMAW, GMAW-P, GTAW, FCAW and DE Arc, lay out parts, mark reference lines, and prepare assemblies for shipment. OT may be required and safety is a priority.

Qualifications

• Must read blueprints and fabricate metal structures per plans.
• Experience welding steel, aluminum, and stainless steel.
• Ability to lift up to 60 pounds and operate shop safely.
• Pass precert welding test.
• Apprenticeship or welding certification preferred.
• High school diploma or GED preferred.

Summary Responsible for the use of various tools and equipment in the fabrication, assembly, and erection of steel structure. This position includes drawing reading, steel structure removal shipboard and reinstall. The position requires a working knowledge of technical to include 1689 and 1688.

• Ensure work is done safely and meets quality standards.
• Must have own basic skill related tools and equipment if not supplied by the workplace.
• Lay-out, fabricate and brace metal structural parts, such as plates, bulkheads, and frames.
• Lay out position of parts on metal, working from blueprints or templates and using scribe and hand tools.
• Locate and mark reference lines, such as center, buttock, and frame lines.
• Proficient in SMAW, GMAW-P, GTAW, and FCAW welding processes as well as Direct Energy Arc Process (i.e. Stud Shooting).
• Align parts in relation to each other, using jacks, turnbuckles, clips, wedges, and mauls.
• Mark location of holes to be drilled and install temporary fasteners to hold part(s) in place for welding.
• Experience with performing structural and pipe welding for various material types (e.g. OSS, HSS, HY-80/100, CRES, CUNI, NICU & ALUM), combination welds (e.g. OSS to CRES, CUNI to CRES, etc.), and various joint designs.
• May tack weld clips and brackets in place prior to permanent welding.
• May roll, bend, flange, cut, and shape plates, beams, and other heavy metal parts, using shop machinery, such as plate rolls, presses, bending brakes, and joggle machines.
• Ensure work is done safely and meets quality standards.
• Measures, marks, scribe's layout, and sequence welding to eliminate distortion.
• Keep work areas clean and organized and take proper care of all equipment and facilities.
• Follow all company rules and policies.
• Provide a great level of attention to detail and focus on the given task.
• Work with team members to maximize productivity and efficiency.
• Verifies conformance of fabricated layouts and items to the blueprint specifications.
• Positions and clamps together components of fabricated metal products preparatory to welding.
• Prepare product for shipment.
• Report any unsafe work conditions or practice to supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Attributes

• Proficient at reading blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece.
• Familiarity with the metric system
• Ability to perform simple shop math, convert decimals to factional equivalents and fractions to decimal equivalents.
• Ability to stand continuously for long periods of time.
• Ability to identify and measure material.
• Ability to follow instructions given both verbally and in written form.
• Willingness to learn and work to the best of his/her abilities as well as dependable work ethic.
• Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs and uses.
• Ability to prep, fit and weld with minimal to no supervision.
• Ability to repair broken or cracked parts, fills holes, and increases size of parts.
• Utilizes hand tools such as grinders, drills, needle guns, saws, calipers, scribes, combination squares.

Education And Experience

• High school graduate, or GED preferred.
• Minimum of 3 years of related experience
• Experience with steel, aluminum and/or stainless steel required.
• Must pass precertification company welding test.
• Apprenticeship or certification in welding from secondary school is preferred

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements

• Most work performed will be onboard a ship, in a dry dock or shipyard under fast- paced conditions; frequently requiring overtime.
• Consistent exposure to extreme temperatures, outdoor elements, high noise levels, toxic or caustic chemicals and dusty conditions.
• Work performed over extended periods of time in tightly configured confined spaces.
• Often works on scaffolds and ladders. To avoid injury, safety clothing is required along with safety devices to protect the eyes, head, or hearing.
• Willingness to work 40+ hours a week.
• Ability to stand for long periods of time.
