Job summary

LaShip in Houma, LA, is seeking a Ship Tacker to support welding operations on offshore vessels. You will assist fitters in positioning, aligning, and preparing components for welding, reading measurements, and using hand tools to ensure accurate assembly.

The role involves setting up welding leads, tack welding in multiple positions, inspecting bead quality, and assisting with installation of various ship components. Safety and teamwork are essential.

Qualifications

• Experience assisting in fitting and welding prep.

• Familiarity with basic shop tools and safety practices.

Responsibilities

• Assist fitter to position, align, and fit components for assembly.
• Read tape measure to support layout and measurement.
• Use hammers, wedges, pry bars, and come-alongs to align parts.
• Grind rough edges, surplus weld, rust, or scale with grinder or chipper.
• Set up welding leads near work area for welding.
• Tack welds in various positions and inspect bead size.
• Mark reference lines for cutting or drilling as required.
• Assist in installing packing, gaskets, liners, bearings, doors, hatches and other accessories.

Edison Chouest Offshore affiliate LaShip is accepting applications for the position of Ship Tacker.

Position Summary:

• Welds short beads at points specified by the fitter or fitter foreman, along overlapping or adjoining edges to hold the workpiece in place for final welding.

Essential Job Functions:

• Assists fitter or fitter-welder to position, align, and fit together plates, structural shapes, piping, and weldments preparatory to assembly into fabricated products.
• Holds, positions, and reads tape measure to assist in layout.
• Uses hammers, wedges, and pry bars, and come-alongs to align parts.
• Grinds or chips rough edges, surplus weld, rust, or scale, using a portable grinder or air chipper.
• Sets up welding leads from the welding machine to the proximity of where work is to be performed.
• Tack welds in flat, horizontal, vertical, diagonal, and overhead positions. Manually guides electrode along weld line as specified by the fitter. Examines weld for proper bead size and characteristics.
• May mark reference lines or locations that are to be cut or drilled.
• Assist fitter in installing packing, gaskets, liners, bearings, doors, hatches, brackets, shafts, wheels, rudders, coolers, anodes, and other structural accessories. May use hand or power tools.
