Job summary

Boston Government Services seeks a Shift Technical Adviser for the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, TN. The role requires deep technical expertise to understand the approved safety basis and assess changes for safe operation at the facility.

Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree and 15–20 years of direct nuclear, engineering, or security-related experience.
  • MS/MA degree with 14–18 years of related work experience acceptable.
  • U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain DOE Q security clearance and HRP certification.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as primary support for the Operations Manager and Shift Manager to ensure daily operations are safe and compliant with procedures.
  • Interface with support organizations to ensure planned operations meet safety basis and authorized work.
  • Troubleshoot and improve issues to meet compliance and improve operational effectiveness.
  • Coordinate large cross-functional activities as needed across multiple interfaces.
  • Present technical briefings describing facility operations and compliance methods.
  • Evaluate modifications against the documented safety analysis per the unreviewed safety question.

Where You\'ll Work

The Y12 National Security Complex located in Oak Ridge, TN, plays a vital role in the U.S. Department of Energy\'s Nuclear Security Enterprise. Y-12 provides manufacturing, technical, and scientific expertise to produce components, subassemblies, and quality evaluations to sustain a U.S. nuclear deterrent; reduce the threat from weapons of mass destruction; supply nuclear material to the Naval Reactors Program; and provide solutions to other emerging national security challenges. Y-12 has developed state-of-the-art capabilities in three core areas: nuclear technology and materials, security and consequence management, and manufacturing and technical services. Y-12 lends its specialized expertise to other federal agencies, such as the U.S. Departments of Defense and Homeland Security, state and local governments, and private-sector companies. Projects at Y-12 include providing protective equipment to soldiers in combat, training National Guard units for radiological emergencies, and creating machining platforms that improve production and efficiency.

About the Role

The Shift Technical Advisor is responsible for providing the technical expertise to understand the approved safety basis for operations of the facility and to evaluate the impact of proposed changes/modifications on the safe operation of the facility.

Responsibilities
  • Serving as primary support team member for the Operations Manager and Shift Manager to ensure daily operations are safe, effective, and performed in accordance with approved procedures.
  • Interfacing with support organizations to understand planned operations within the facility and ensure activities are in compliance with facility safety basis authorized work.
  • Performing troubleshooting and improvement activities for emerging issues within the operations management scope of responsibility to resolve issues and improve effectiveness in implementation of compliance requirements.
  • Serving in a project management role as needed for coordination of large, cross-cutting activities within the facility that involve multiple interfaces that cross organizational lines.
  • Presenting technical briefings or presentations, as required, that describe and explain approved facility operations and compliance implementation methods.
  • Evaluating proposed modifications or changes against the approved Documented Safety Analysis via the Unreviewed Safety Question.
  • Determining processes to ensure changes are within the scope and methods appropriate for the facility.
  • Providing on-call coverage for assigned weekends based upon a rotation with others in the group; on-call is as needed, which may or may not require weekend work for the assigned weekend.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • BA/BS Degree plus 15-20 years of direct experience required or an MA or MS with 14-18 years of experience.
  • Must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e., Baccalaureate in engineering or related scientific major 2 years job-related, and 1-year nuclear experience; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative).
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Successful drug screening.
  • Requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance; however, all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status.
  • Requires the ability to obtain a Human Reliability Program (HRP) Certification.
Location/Work Arrangement
  • This position is a fully onsite position at Y12 National Security Complex.
  • Schedule is full-time, Monday - Friday 40-hour week.
