Job summary

The GEO Group, Inc. is seeking a Shift Supervisor to oversee security and control activities in a detention facility, coordinating detainee supervision and safety while preparing required records.

You will lead a team, develop and implement policies, respond to incidents, and ensure compliance with procedures. The role requires experience in detention or security environments and the ability to manage staff and maintain daily logs.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Minimum 1 year as detention officer and 2 years in field supervision.
• College coursework and advanced training in behavioral sciences or related field preferred.
• Must be mature, flexible, and able to command respect of detainees and staff.
• Must be at least 21 years of age.

Responsibilities

• The Shift Supervisor assists in the development and implementation of policies, procedures and regulations for custody, security and/or treatment of detainees/inmates.
• Responds to major unusual occurrences; facilitates prompt and appropriate assistance to detainees/inmates in injury, illness or emotional trauma.
• Promotes an atmosphere conducive to development of detainees/inmates and staff through encouraging behavior, arranging facilities, and influencing relationships.
• Directs the work of other employees, including hiring, evaluating performance, training, and disciplinary actions.
• Makes assignments, reviews post orders and ensures procedures, including emergency procedures, are trained.
• Reviews disciplinary matters concerning both staff and detainees.
• Reviews staff effectiveness and conducts inspections to ensure policy compliance.
• Provides guidance on situational problems and refers complex issues.
• Prepares records and reports and maintains daily logs.
• Responsible for attaining facility goals and ensuring compliance with rules for security operations.
• Directs work and provides training of detainee/inmate staff; may provide detainee supervision in other areas.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

Summary

The Shift Supervisor supervises security/control activities and staff in an assigned area, which provides for maximum facility coordination in detainees/inmates supervision and safety, in addition to the preparation of required records and reports.

Primary Duties And Responsibilities

• The Shift Supervisor assists in the development and implementation of policies, procedures and regulations for custody, security and/or treatment of detainees/inmates.
• Responds to major unusual occurrences. Facilitates prompt and appropriate assistance to detainees/inmates in the event of injury, illness or emotional trauma.
• The Shift Supervisor promotes an atmosphere conducive to personality and character development of detainees/inmates and staff through the encouragement of favorable behavior patterns, arrangement of physical facilities, and influencing relationships among detainees/inmates.
• Directs the work of other employees. This includes the selection, hiring, evaluating job performance, employee training/development, promoting and any disciplinary action, including termination.
• The Shift Supervisor makes assignments, reviews post orders and assures that all procedures including emergency procedures are in place and staff is trained in proper implementation.
• Reviews disciplinary matters concerning both staff and detainees.
• The Shift Supervisor reviews staff effectiveness and conducts frequent physical inspections of the facility to ensure compliance with policies and procedures.
• Gives primary guidance on situational problems; making referrals for more complex problems.
• The Shift Supervisor prepares records and reports as assigned by management. Maintains daily logs as required.
• Responsible for attaining facility goals/objectives and ensuring compliance with all rules, regulations, policies and/or procedures for security operations.
• The Shift Supervisor directs work, provides training and performs inspections of work performed by detainee/inmate staff. May provide detainee supervision and security in other areas as needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

• High school diploma or GED certification required
• Must have a minimum of one (1) year of experience as a detention officer and two (2) years of successful experience in field supervision (e.g., civilian community law enforcement, commercial or industrial guard service, or security service supervisory positions.). The two (2) year requirement may be satisfied by completion of a career development program that includes work-related experience, training, or college credits at a level of achievement equivalent to the basic requirement, as practiced in the federal hiring process.
• College coursework and advanced training in behavioral sciences, correctional services or related field preferred.
• Must be mature, flexible, intellectually alert and able to command the respect and confidence of detainees and staff and possess a high tolerance to mental stress.
• Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age or older.
