Job summary

Jackson County Missouri is seeking a shift leader to supervise staff and youth in a juvenile residential facility. You will oversee shift operations, manage documentation, and coordinate activities to ensure safe and secure conditions for residents and staff.

The role requires experience with troubled youth, strong communication, and the ability to de-escalate conflicts. Expect to lead, train, and schedule staff while maintaining compliance with court and departmental policies.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED plus two years of work experience with troubled youth.
• Must be 25 years old or older.
• Valid driver's license and proof of auto insurance.
• Must pass physical exam/performance test.
• Background screenings required for employment.

Responsibilities

• Prepare documents related to shift operations and safety inspections.
• Review and complete staff reports, such as incident reports.
• Ensure information is relayed between shifts for cohesive operations.
• Lead staff with guidance, direction, and training per policies.
• Delegate duties during shift (e.g., suicide watches, medication dispensation).
• Ensure adequate staff coverage and arrange backup as needed.
• Supervise and counsel youth, addressing daily needs and conflicts.
• Intercede in conflicts using de-escalation techniques; may involve restraint.
• Coordinate on- and off-site recreational activities for juveniles.
• Transport juveniles to appointments as required.

Department: Residential Services County or State Funded: County Exempt or Non-exempt: Non-exempt Paygrade: C-111 Salary pay range: $22.92 - $28.63 hourly

Basic Function and Responsibility:

To ensure the efficient operation of the facility by supervising staff, youth, activities, and security within the facility. Oversee the operation of a treatment or detention facility shift. Review, prepare, and compose documents and information relating to shift operations. Coordinate activities for juveniles.

Appointing Authority and Supervision Received:

The deputy court administrator of family court is the appointing authority. The shift leader receives direct supervision by the facility supervisor.

Supervision Exercised:

This position is directly responsible for the supervision of youth workers assigned to the unit.

Characteristic and Assigned Duties:

• Prepare various documents, both manual and electronic, related to the operation of a work shift, such as the performance of security and safety inspections, incident reports, and medication logs.
• Review and complete all required staff reports, such as incident reports.
• Ensure that information is relayed to both management and staff from other shifts to provide cohesive operations.
• Act as a lead worker in providing staff with guidance, direction, and training in the performance of duties based on policies and procedures, and operational rules/protocols.
• Delegate duties to be performed during the shift, such as suicide watches, and the dispensation of juvenile medications.
• Ensure adequate staff coverage, which involves contacting and scheduling backup workers.
• Ensure facility surroundings are safe and secure for residents and staff and take appropriate action to correct for report deficiencies.
• Work scheduled assignments necessary to meet the court’s obligation to provide for the needs of juvenile residents, including mandatory overtime as required.
• Supervise, monitor, and provide guidance to juvenile residents to ensure that the youth’s daily needs are met Interact and counsel with youth on an individual and group basis.
• Intercede in and manage conflicts among staff, residents and visitors through established de-escalation techniques which may involve physical intervention and restraint.
• Coordinate on and off-site recreational and leisure activities for juvenile residents.
• Ensure that juveniles are transported as necessary for appointments.
• Perform other duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge of adolescent behavior and various treatment and counseling modalities.
• Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing, in a tactful and courteous manner with diverse parties and to prepare clear, complete, and logical reports.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the judiciary, court administration, and other stakeholders from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
• Ability to make sound decisions in accordance with laws, regulations and departmental policies and procedures.
• Ability to remain calm and in control in an emergency, or stressful situations.
• Ability to restrain youth in a physical confrontation.
• Skill in the operation of standard office equipment.

Minimum Qualifications:

(Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis, provided a high school diploma or GED has been obtained.) High School diploma or equivalent plus two years of work experience with troubled youth.

Necessary Special Requirement:

• Minimum age requirement is 25 years old.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license from state of residence, and provide proof of such.
• Must possess and maintain state mandated auto liability insurance and properly licensed/reliable vehicle, and provide proof of such.
• Must be able to successfully pass physical exam/physical abilities performance test.
• All candidates selected for employment will be subject to background screenings as part of the hiring process.
• Certain positions may also require additional checks, including but not limited to education verification, child abuse and neglect clearances, drug screenings, and physical assessments, as applicable to the responsibilities of the role.

Work Environment:

Work is performed within a secured, or non-secured facility. Subject to intercede or be involved in physical confrontations and restraint. Subject to youth who are aggressive and volatile, and those who have psychiatric, or other needs. Transport youth and work mandatory overtime as required.
