Job summary

General Motors is seeking a Shift Flex Fab Laser Engineer/Shift Leader for 2nd shift at the Pontiac Stamping plant. The role leads hourly teams in laser cutting, bending, and welding processes, focusing on safety, quality, cost, and environment.

You will plan production, use Industry 4.0 tools, and mentor team leaders while coordinating with maintenance and production control to meet daily plan and TPM objectives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required.
  • 5+ years of manufacturing or fabrication experience with leadership in union environments.
  • Experience with sheet metal forming and welding processes.

  • Plan and manage production using Industry 4.0 MES tools.
  • Utilize 2D/3D CAD tools for laser cutting, punching, bending, and welding.
  • Coordinate with maintenance for process troubleshooting.

  • Communicate across all shifts and report status to Area Manager.
  • Lesson downtime causes and drive corrective actions with maintenance.

Job Description Shift Flex Fab Laser Engineer/Shift Leader – 2nd shift (2pm-10pm)

Onsite: This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to our Pontiac Stamping plant location.

What You’ll Do

Responsible to lead & mentor hourly team on daily basis towards daily production operation. Work is of a technical nature using independent judgment within the limits of GMS; focusing on Safety, People, Quality, Responsiveness, Cost, and Environment (SPQRCE).

Responsibilities
  • Knowledge on multiple sheet metal forming and assembly production processes such as press brake bending, laser cutting, punching, spot welding, laser welding, arc welding and MIG/TIG welding
  • Plan and Manage Production using Industry 4.0 tools (Manufacturing Execution Software)
  • Use 2D/3D design and programming tools for laser cutting, punching, bending and welding for sheet metal fabrication
  • Support equipment and process troubleshooting across cutting and bending process in conjunction with maintenance team
  • Communicate effectively across all shifts
  • Champion of allocated BPD activities
  • Discuss weekly production plans with production control
  • Adjust schedule as needed to solve production problems
  • Allocate manpower as needed for each press line; plan release for training
  • Maintain shift safety by audits, observation and follow up of all incidents
  • Maintain and improve machine up time.
  • Prevent recurrence of breakdown causes
  • Ensure TPM program is on track
  • Discuss major downtime causes with maintenance weekly and request corrective action
  • Sign off standardized work charts.
  • Agree with all shifts
  • Lead shift meetings for SPQRCE
  • Report shift status to the Area Manager
  • Coach and mentor Group Leaders
  • Ensure GMS is being followed
  • Understand and comply with the terms of local and national labor agreements
  • Ensure cost controls achieve budget needs
  • Support area manager to resolve manpower issues in conjunction with union
  • Liaise with customers for quality problems and co-ordinate countermeasures
  • Rotate shifts as needed
Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of manufacturing or fabrication experience (conventional + new technologies)
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • Leadership experience in a union environment
  • Knowledge in multiple sheet metal forming and assembly production processes such a press brake bending, laser cutting, punching, spot welding, laser welding, arc welding and MIG/TIG welding
  • Experience in using 2D/3D design and programming tools for laser cutting, punching, bending and welding for sheet metal fabrication
  • Experience with using 3D CAD software tools such as Teamcenter Visualization, NX
  • Experience in launching new products or technology while dealing with ambiguity
  • High level of analytical ability and interpersonal skills
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work overtime as needed
Preferred Qualifications
  • 5+ years of manufacturing of fabrication experience (conventional + new technologies)
  • Experience working with Trumpf Technology in a production or pre-production environment
  • Knowledge in industry 4.0 tools focused on production management
  • Experience in running high-mix and low volume operation
  • Knowledge of and coaching experiences in Global Manufacturing Systems (GMS)
  • Demonstrated technical and professional skills in job-related area
  • Experience working in a union facility
